Oh and it's not gonna be the same...they will name the characters the same but rob zombie has different plans for it...no same stoyline...
Yes, you should check out the series. At the very least, watch the original Halloween, which is my favorite horror film of all time and a common candidate for most people's lists too. The rest are mostly good fun (Resurrection is painful though), but none match the masterful original.
The remake is not going to be better. I'm looking forward to it greatly and will see it opening night, but I already know. Why? Zombie's need to explain everything. His comments like how he always wondered about little things in the original, like the Rabbit in Red matchbook Dr. Loomis picks up....well, he is actually going to have the place in the remake and I believe Michael's mother is a stripper there or something. When it comes to my horror, I'm a guy who likes to not have things painted out so clearly or I like coming to my own conclusions about something.
But this is fine with me. While I generally loathe the idea of remakes, at least he is going to do what anyone should do with a remake, making plenty of things different and trying to infuse something else into the series. No sense in doing shot for shot remakes like the horrific one of Psycho. There's no point to that at all.
I just wish Malek Akkad had the balls to push this movie back to its Halloween release date. Saw IV will be a monster to contend with, but it is a freaking serious Halloween film....release it on the damn day.
Lastly, I have been following this intently since the day it was revealed that Zombie would be directing and it would indeed be a remake....I've experienced every high and low that each day's news brought. Zombie would say something right that would make me champion his cause and then the very next day, something would come up that would make me seriously doubt the movie would be anything worthwhile at all. I'm looking forward to it and I fully expect it to be the second best film in the franchise, but no movie will ever top the masterpiece that is the original Halloween.
I think he'll do right by this film. I was just looking on a Wikipedia page on this, and I like the fact that this will be a stand alone film, meaning there won't be a sequel to this. The following is from the wikipedia article:
Filming took place in the same neighborhood that Carpenter used for the original Halloween.[9] Production would officially end on March 22, 2007. By the end, Zombie expressed that it was not his intention to leaving it open for a sequel, and he has no plans on returning to work on a sequel.

As long as it does well, which is a given, there will be a sequel(s). I remember reading about Malcom McDowell (Dr.Loomis) saying that he is signed for three films.
