If you don't like telemarketers (TM) don't hang up on them, and don't cuss/be rude to them. Basically these 2 things make their job much easier.
Basically I was a TM for a short time so I know how it operates, and I have no pity for them either.
Instead of hanging up on them, or trying to guilt them out of doing their job you should string them along.
1. Keep them on the phone for as long as possible. Basically TMs get bonuses for sales and sales are basically done w/ a focus on spamming calls. If a TM spends 10 minutes on 1 call and doesn't make the sale it looks bad.
2. Keep you cool. Basically if a TM is cussed at or if a person is rude in anyway it gives the TM a lot of freedom over what they do w/ the call. Since it's obvious you won't buy anything the customer* won't care if you drop the call because it wasn't a sale.
*a TM customer is actually the group that hires the telemarketing service.
3. Make them repeat things, ask them to speak louder, and make sure you speak quietly. A TMs voice is their main tool, and it's often stressed. By making them speak louder and more often you are going to annoy them, and they can't do anything about it. If they need to speak louder they annoy the people in the call center, and stress their voice more. Also since they go off scripts they don't want to repeat things anymore then they have to.
4. Never clearly say you're not interested, or No (but don't buy/agree to anything either). This might lead the TM to stop the sale, and upon review an supervisor could deem that the sale was still salvageable. Using phrases like "I don't think I need that", or "I don't think I can afford that" can create a different atmosphere to different types of mindsets. It may not seem like a big deal, but if it happens enough it can get a TM fired, demoted, or at least chewed out by a boss.
If as many people followed these 4 things as those that cuss you out or hang up than the TM industry would probably collapse.
