Whenever a telemarketer calls, I let him talk and kindly say no to his offer. But Ive been thinking about just hanging up on them the second they let me know its a sale. I know its rude and all but I really dont care and in the long run, it will save me time and them time. They can actually spend that extra minute to move to the next guy on the list. Everyone benefits.

Its kinda mean but I like to mess with telemarketers. Some guy called not long ago saying the call insurance on my car ran out and I should buy from him . . . but I don't have a car. So, when he asked what my vehicle was I said it was a 1996 pink unicorn. Then he hung up.

I normally just hang up. I always think back to the Simpsons bit though where there is the telemarketer and he's like "oh my god, she hung up on me" and starts to cry.

I usually wait for them to finish, but lately I just hang up because 'they were breaking up', or 'no one was answering'.

I'd like to one day talk to them and be like "well actually, while I have you on the phone would you be interested in purchasing...". :P See how they react.

I talk to them, I'd rather be rude with them when they're really annoying than just hang up. It just feels better that way. For example, I once told them I didn't have the time, but then he continued reading his thing that was long so I told him look, I don't have time for this and he kept insisting. So basically I started shouting at him that I do not have the time right now and to leave me alone. Then I hung up.

Don't pick up the phone in the first place. Also, get on a do-not-call list.

I will hang up on them immediately from time to time, and other times I'll mess with them. If I have to go to the bathroom anyway I'll bring the phone in there, set it down beside the toilet, and strain loudly away with my bowels. By the time I'm finished they've already hung up.

Half the time there is such a large lag in connecting the call that I just hang up before they get to say anything. Other half I just tell them not to call back.

If you don't like telemarketers (TM) don't hang up on them, and don't cuss/be rude to them. Basically these 2 things make their job much easier.

Basically I was a TM for a short time so I know how it operates, and I have no pity for them either.

Instead of hanging up on them, or trying to guilt them out of doing their job you should string them along.

1. Keep them on the phone for as long as possible. Basically TMs get bonuses for sales and sales are basically done w/ a focus on spamming calls. If a TM spends 10 minutes on 1 call and doesn't make the sale it looks bad.

2. Keep you cool. Basically if a TM is cussed at or if a person is rude in anyway it gives the TM a lot of freedom over what they do w/ the call. Since it's obvious you won't buy anything the customer* won't care if you drop the call because it wasn't a sale.

*a TM customer is actually the group that hires the telemarketing service.

3. Make them repeat things, ask them to speak louder, and make sure you speak quietly. A TMs voice is their main tool, and it's often stressed. By making them speak louder and more often you are going to annoy them, and they can't do anything about it. If they need to speak louder they annoy the people in the call center, and stress their voice more. Also since they go off scripts they don't want to repeat things anymore then they have to.

4. Never clearly say you're not interested, or No (but don't buy/agree to anything either). This might lead the TM to stop the sale, and upon review an supervisor could deem that the sale was still salvageable. Using phrases like "I don't think I need that", or "I don't think I can afford that" can create a different atmosphere to different types of mindsets. It may not seem like a big deal, but if it happens enough it can get a TM fired, demoted, or at least chewed out by a boss.

If as many people followed these 4 things as those that cuss you out or hang up than the TM industry would probably collapse.

I dont get #4. Why would acting unsure cause the sale to be ended? If anything, acting unsure would make the sale seem salvageable. Wouldnt it be better to just straight out say I dont need ANYTHING from you at all and let him move on to the next guy on the list?

I used to play with them until I got into trouble with the police. Someone called and asked if I wanted a carpet cleaning and at first I was like "will it get blood up?" and when that didn't upset her I was like "can you get the blood out of the carpet in the trunk of my car?" The police knocked on the door like 30 minutes later.

So now I'm on the no-call list.

I usually get between 3-8 calls from telemarketers a day, so I usually hang up on them, however I sometimes let them speak and then kindly refuse. It all depends on how many have already called and what mood I'm in. I do remember one time some guy called to ask if some people did a good job working on our kitchen or something like that. I didn't really know what he was on about and instantly hung up, only for him to call right back and create a very awkward moment. "Oh, it looks like we got cut off".... Yeah, that was it.

I also had one be a complete dick to me because he went on and on for ages only to have me tell him that the home owner wasn't in. I would have told him if he'd given me a chance to talk instead of rambling on and on.

I don't answer my phone. Ever. In fact my ringers are all set to silent. Anyone who actually wants to talk to me leaves a message, and I call back. Works like a charm.

When I was twelve I tried pulling the "I'm sorry, I'm busy right now, can I have YOUR home phone number and name so I can call you in the middle of your dinner?". The guy on the other end told me to go **** myself, and he later called back acting as a pizza delivery company, and attempted to tell me that I had 14 orders of pizza on the way to my house.

I usually screen them out via caller ID, but if they manage to get through, I just hang up on them.
