A little black circle that pops up at the top right corner of the screen. I always notice it out of the corner of my eye, but when I turn to look at it its gone. I know this isn't just my theater, because I've seen it at others. Does anybody know what it is?

If the information in Fight Club serves me correctly, it's to alert the guy in charge of running the film to change the reel.

Though that's probably done automatically usually, and most of the better cinemas have switched to digital projection.

that is exactly correct. If you watch old movies( Pre-1980s) you'll see it in the home copies of those movies as well (unless they are digitally remastered) because the only source of transfer was from the original film, so when they were released on VHS, many movies still had the "cigarette burn" in the upper left-hand corner.

I would assume Chuck Palahniuk didn't just throw it in there for no reason. It's probably true. (Referring back to what I already said.)

Watch Fight Club and they'll explain it. Apparently they are called "cigarette burns", and they are there so that the projectionist knows when to change reels.

You should read it too. (Not that I'm trying to be one of those pretentious people who take any opportunity to remind everybody, "Ooo, I've read the boook." I'm just saying you should read it. He's a really unique author.)

But anyway... I've read the boook.

I always though they were stains, dirt, or scratches on the film print. But most everyone has switched to digital projection. Your theater but still be using the old stuff.

I know exactly what you're talking about, and yes there's a reason why that flash of a circle is there. I read somewhere that the film makers do that to actually notify the people in the little film room (that room behind all the seats where they have the projector and everything) when they're about to change rolls of film. Since projected movies are made with multiple rolls of film that a placed in and out of the projector.

I don't understand. Seems like such a waste of film when you could just put it out on your arm like a real man.

I thought it had to do with copyright issues. Like if somebody was filming it on a camera from the seats then posted it on the internet then you could tell. lol I dont know. I dont think its dirt since I just saw a movie that was digital and wasnt on a real since digital is on a hard drive.
