If the information in Fight Club serves me correctly, it's to alert the guy in charge of running the film to change the reel.
Though that's probably done automatically usually, and most of the better cinemas have switched to digital projection.

Hmm sounds plausible.

I believe this is the correct answer.
It's just a subliminal message telling you to buy popcorn and Coke for $20.SpaceMoose
Well it isn't working very well.

Maybe they should just hide a naked girl in some ice cubes.
A little black circle that pops up at the top right corner of the screen. I always notice it out of the corner of my eye, but when I turn to look at it its gone. I know this isn't just my theater, because I've seen it at others. Does anybody know what it is?omfg_its_dally
Watch Fight Club and they'll explain it. Apparently they are called "cigarette burns", and they are there so that the projectionist knows when to change reels.
If I was more in the loop I would have seen Fight Club by now and already know this. Its one of my priorities to do in the near future.omfg_its_dally
You should read it too. (Not that I'm trying to be one of those pretentious people who take any opportunity to remind everybody, "Ooo, I've read the boook." I'm just saying you should read it. He's a really unique author.)
But anyway... I've read the boook.

lol...at first I thought you were insulting the guy, and I was like, "damn, there was no call for that."
Yeah, I was like, "Dude, what the hell?" until I realized what my screen name is.

Beat me to it. That's what I think is true, too.
Yeah I just got done watching Fight Club for the first time, great movie.
And for anybody wondering here is what I was talking about:
that is exactly correct. If you watch old movies( Pre-1980s) you'll see it in the home copies of those movies as well (unless they are digitally remastered) because the only source of transfer was from the original film, so when they were released on VHS, many movies still had the "cigarette burn" in the upper left-hand corner.sinistra45
I don't understand. Seems like such a waste of film when you could just put it out on your arm like a real man.
