When you take care of a carbon steel sword, how regularly should you oil the blade? Also is it okay to use extra virgin olive oil instead of camellia oil to keep the blade in good condition?

Lol just buy a gun man. Get with the times. I see guys with swords on episodes of cops and worlds most shocking and it never turns out well for the guy weilding the sword.HubadubalubahuThis. Carry a Ka-Bar if you're worried about running out of ammo... and they have a finish so you don't have to worry about oiling.
Use 3 in 1 oil.... er, whenever it feels dry. Also, lrn 2 google.CptJSparrow
typical "go google it" durf. The reason I ask a question like this on a forum is to get more personal answers and to get a better angle and see my options. Obviously I've already googled it, now I just want to see what other people use. And if you don't have anything helpful to add, why bother wasting your own time writing out such a pointless message?

go to a sword forum then. i think for most of the people here, the most they would have gotten near a sword would be in a museum/hack-n-slash video gamesWhat you want to do is use a standard gun oil, like Remington oil or something. I take care of my grandfather's old japanese sword he got during WWII and I oil it once a week, but I think you can go a good month without oiling it if you keep it in a sheath. If not, stick with once a week.

Lol, the first helpful post. Thank you. And I did read about gun oil and it's pretty good for sword care. But as of now I think I'm just gonna go w/ extra virgin olive oil. It's cheap and protects the blade adequately. I might decide to buy gun oil later though.

I use the olive oil when I run out of Rem Oil, so it's a good substitute, but whether or not you use a sheath, because it isn't as thick as gun oil, still oil it once a week.

yup, I also read that wooden scabbards soak up excess oil and that helps preserve the blade even further.
[QUOTE="ChampionoChumps"]I've never oiled mine and they're still in good shape.WiiCubeM1
If they're made of stainless, that might be why. Carbon Steel rusts pretty quickly if you don't oil it regularly.
That may be the case. I think they are stainless now that you mention it.He never said he was going to use the sword for stabbing things...
Maybe he just wants to display it...
i bought a legit katana off my friend who was a collector for an amount i wont say here, but long story short,i lost it when the cops raided my house and seized it when they found out i didnt have a permit to own one and was fined.
bbwwoman
That's odd, I'm pretty sure u don't need a permit to own a sword, in the U.S atleast.

Ah well, what more could I expect from gamespot? I like crossword puzzles.

How many people here do you honestly expect to own and maintain swords?
I really don't care about the number who may have owned and maintained swords. I still got answers from someone who has. And that's all that matters.

Sure you got an answer eventually, but you b*tched enough before you did. I know that, personally speaking, if I had a question about such a specialized subject I'd to a forum dedicated to that subject. I would not go to a forum where few are likely to know the information I wanted and then complain when people didn't answer my question.

Buddy, the only one who seems butthurt here is you. Has the creation of this topic really infuriated you so much? Forum nazis like you are just hilarious. I did not complain about people not answering my question; I complained only in regard to the worthless input of trolls. It seems like this simple little thread really struck a chord w/ you. One bit of advice- get over yourself.

Look at your own posts. They scream butthurt. I am merely offering a friendly suggestion.

And here I thought Buddhists were jolly peepz. Using the word **** is not normally equated w/ a friendly suggestion. And if you thought that was a friendly suggestion, you're pretty arrogant.
What are you doing with the sword that you'd need to keep it in good condition?
Pirate700
massacring smurfs. No, but in reality it just looks better as a collector's item if it's in good condition.

Don't buy into Hollywood created myths and stereotype. Buddhists are......people, just like anyone else. And yeah, it was a friendly suggestion. Using the word 'b*tch' instead of 'complain' is pretty miron. Kinda like using the word 'sh*t' in place of "stuff".

Unless you live in a really humid climate or are actually using it, you shouldn't need to ever keep your average sword oiled.[QUOTE="Iridionprime"]

When you say that someone was b*tching that implies that they were acting like a b*tch. If you say sh*t instead of stuff that in now way denigrates the character of another person.
You should take up smithing if you're into swords and such, it's an interesting hobby. I took it in high school before I eventually changed over to woodworking and never looked back. Everyone needs an interesting hobby and building something with your own hands is always satisfying!Huffanddoback
You have a sword smithing class in high school.

Not exactly, it was a smithing/metal work elective, swords and knives were obviously the only things we were not allowed to make. Every student was required to take a elective every year in my school district from 7th grade on. I usually went with the hobby classes and took print shop and metal working before I moved into woodworking. This was during the 90's before budgetcuts and threats of lawsuits probbly shut these programs down.

yeah sword smithing always looked interesting to me. But I'm still 18 and my parents aren't happy w/ me getting a sword, i doubt they would be willing to help me become a sword smith hehe. But I definitely plan on making some of my own swords when i get older.
