Has Futurama gone way downhill since its return?

I think it has. What was a funny, clever show with good stories and relatable characters has turned into an incredibly hackneyed show with annoying characters and unfunny jokes. It is kind of similar to what happened to Family Guy after its return, and it most closely reminds me of new Simpsons episodes. Futurama has really become unwatchable to the point where I switch the station whenever newer episodes come on. What do you think?

I can't tell tbh. When I'm watching an episode I haven't see before, I'm almost never sure if it's a new or older one. Overall, I still enjoy it slightly more than Family Guy, and definitely over American Dad or The Cleveland Show.

Yeah, but the new episodes grow on me. I used to hate them, but generally, they get better on second and third viewings.

I don't really think so, I honestly didn't really enjoy Futurama when the romance between Fry and Leela began, but maybe that's just me.

I've really tried to give them a chance; I've watched most of the new ones and the movies. But goddamn, they're awful. There are some "classic" Futurama jokes and moments sprinkled in, but I almost feel as though they're accidental, given how bad the rest of the episodes are.

And what's with Fry and Leela's relationship? It seems like it changes from episode to episode, sometimes disappearing altogether.

There are like 4 or 5 good episodes in the new seasons. I am so disappointed with my favorite show of all time. It's like they changed the humor to fit the comedy central audience. They are relying on shock value and making fun of social issues too much (like southpark, I hate southpark)

It's not as low as Simpsons got at least.

It was at it's best before (and during) that episode where Fry plays that magic instrument thing on a stage with the devils hands. Which was originally supposed to be a finale of sorts if I recall.

Yep. After season 4 (when Fox canceled it) They released 3 pretty good movies but season 5 was awful and the 2 after it weren't much better. I don't understand how such a great show can fall so quickly. Maybe Comedy Central has something to do with it?

When epic and major events seem to happen in that universe every once in a while, even supposedly exciting events must start to get dull at some point.

I kept hearing that it had, but was pleasantly surprised when I finally saw seasons 5 and 6. The evolution and time travel episodes were brilliant, I thought, and truth be told the diversity/type of episodes as well as quality of episodes varied quite a bit in the first four seasons as well.

I've personally enjoyed the newer seasons more. But then again that could just be me been bored of the Season 1-4 reruns and just being glad to see new episodes.

Futurama was never really that fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy[ed] it, but I think it tends to be a little overrated.

Nope. Futurama has stayed relatively the same, especially in comparison with season four. There are bound to be some changes over time, but nothing as dramatic as what people have said. I think it's their tastes that have changed. Granted, I haven't seen the latest season, but last I saw Futurama it seemed like the same old show. In fact, whenever I re-watch the new episodes I get the same pleasure out of them that I did out of the earlier episodes before I watched them a gagillion times.

Proposition Infinity, The Late Phillip J. Fry, and The Duh-Vinci Code are some of my favorite Futurama episodes. There are also plenty of classic lines ("Hopes..deleted," "I'm afraid we'll have to use...MATH!" "The horse says: DOCTORATE DENIED!" and "I don't want to live on this planet anymore."), and some funny musical numbers (in the year one million and a half, humankind is ruled by giraffes). I seriously don't get why season five gets so much hate, but then again maybe season six was abnormally awful.

the new episodes are unwatchable. First four seasons were fantastic but I just think they try waaayyy to hard to be funny now. The stories feel forced and the characters come off as cheap immitations of their former selves. It isn't the same show anymore at all.

Futurama was an awesome show, but not on the sheer level of hilarity that The Simpsons had and without the lolsorandumxD moments that occasionally made Family Guy great. I'm sure it's nostalgia that's killing it for some, but as far as I'm concerned Futurama was never that great and I'm sure if I was still watching the show I wouldn't notice a decline in quality like I did The Simpsons or Family Guy, it'd still just be Futurama.

Fun Fact: King of the Hill > all of those mentioned.

I hate to break it to you, but it's your tastes changing. Whether you still like the old episodes or not is irrelevant, you dislike new ones that are in no noticable way different than old ones which you like, in other words you no longer like the same things you liked before, in other words your tastes have changed. Especially when you bring up season four. With a few exceptions, I could mix most of the episodes from seasons four and five together and someone who has never seen Futurama before would never be able to tell the difference.

I've never cringed like I did at stuff like the susan boil joke. Theres a lot of just bad humor that gets quickly dated after the episode comes out. Futurama was never that desperate to get laughs, the characters were just funny, but now they force these topical cheesy jokes on them rather than the humor coming from who they are as characters themselves.

I watched the original series and was sad when they canceled it, I watched the movies and I thought what is this S***? then I watched the new comedy central funded series and I felt the same way what is this s***.

There is only so many of the same jokes one can tell before it gets old.

I said that, with a few exceptions, I could mix season four and five episodes and they would be virtually undistinguishable to the untrained eye, and I stand by that. If I remove Attack of the Killer App from season five and The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings from season four then the humor between the two is virtually identical.

Wait, so resorting to different humor isn't changing the show? That makes no sense. I also love how you said that whether I like the old episodes is irrelevant because it disproves your point. If my tastes changed and the original seasons are the same as the new ones (according to you) I wouldn't still like the old ones, which is not the case.

Okay, do they do corny, Susan Boil jokes all the time? No, they did it once, the overall tone of the series hasn't changed.

As for your tastes changing, it doesn't mean that, stop putting words in my mouth. You liked the humor of the old episodes before, time went by, and now you dislike that same humor in new episodes because your tastes have changed and you want to see something different. It doesn't mean you have to stop liking the humor in the old episodes, you're just looking for something different now. Welcome to growing older.

Not really. I've only seen like 3 episode of the newer seasons, but it doesn't seem to have changed all that much.

And I think this is more understandable than what he said. If he had said that some episodes resorted to humor that Futurama never used to resort to that would be one thing, but he said that the show as a whole had changed so much that it's hard to find a good one, and it hasn't changed that much.

Why would I still find the old episodes funny if I didn't like the humor in them? That makes no sense.

I think I enjoyed it more when it was on Fox. I was never really into Futurama anyways. I think the best episodes I can remember was when Bender was worshipped like a god and had his own statue and the other episode when they were fighting these pink balls and Bender eventually guessed the word he wasn't supposed to say and he self-destructed. I also remember a good Christmas-themed episode where there was like this evil robotic Santa.
