I'm primarily talking about the T.V. series. I remember the show being very good in the '90s. I was flirting with the idea of watching some of the seasons again but, like my beloved '80s cartoons, it might have lost some of that something-something over the years. Your thoughts?

Absolutely. I'm running through the series again, actually. I can't wait to introduce my son to it in 10 years or so.

I actually just recently discovered that Netflix has them available for instant stream, so I've been watching them all again and I still think they're good. I mean the effects are terrible and some of the acting and dialogue can be pretty cheesy, but overall I think it holds up just fine.

Well, the initial responses have been encouraging. By the way, I forgot to mention that I am not counting the episodes with the T1000; there are no X-files without Mulder! :P

I love X-files. That's why I love Fringe so much, it mirrors the "freaky/paranormal" of X-files.

After rewatching some of the episodes, I'd realized that I'd forgotten how funny and offbeat they can be. Like the one where they meet Sheriff Andy Taylor after talking about how similar the town is to Mayberry. Then the sheriff introduces them to Deputy Barney and Mulder inquires, "Fife!?". The deputy stares him down and says, "I hate you".

Yeah, mostly. I'm watching it on Netflix right now. Not very scary, though. A couple episodes are straight-up silly...though the ones that are meant to be silly are still funny.

How does that compare to X-Files? I like pretty much all the shows in that genre (Kolchak, X-Files, Supernatural) but I don't really know anything about Fringe.

It's a very similar format, but replaces the paranormal with pseudo-science (which really isn't that much of a difference anyway when you get right down to it). It's basically modelled off of the X-Files (the creators even place numerous homages to the X-Files in it). As far as Fringe is concerned, it seems to be more character-driven than the X-Files was (I've particularly grown fond of Walter).

Even though hated the ending (earth doomed) and really disliked the final seasons the prime season episodes are still awesome.

We need more high fiction shows like it and less game shows, reality shows, sitcoms, and public service (law enforcement or medical) dramas.

I'm ******** sic of ________ new married couple sitcom or ___ season of a reality show (like survivor).

Yep, couldn't put it better myself. I love Fringe, the special effects are awesome (makes for some pretty gory episodes).

The self-contained episodes have aged very well.

The continuing storyline episodes are utterly worthless, since they dragged on far too long and never ended up really going anywhere.

To put into perspective, the self-contained episodes are like episodes from 1-5 of Lost. While the ongoing conspiracy episodes were more like the entire 6th season of Lost.

I imagine that it's not too difficult to make a self-contained storyline that works pretty damn well as a 45 minute episode. As long as it's self-contained, that's it. But keeping things coherent for multiple seasons with regards to a single storyline is probably MUCH harder. And then there comes the moment where you realize that the series is going to end up as a big pile of ****, and that you've wasted your time by bothering with it in the first place.

Which brings me to my biggest wish...that Breaking Bad ends SOON. That it ends before it becomes too big and over-bloated, and that the creators end it before it drags on way too long and the magic disappears. Dragging this stuff out for too long just ends up with it sucking. End it while it can still end well, then move on to a different property.

Yeah, that's really where the series started to decline - and fast.

I'm pretty sure that the series was in decline well before that.

If I'm not mistaken, part of Duchovny leaving had to do with the series becoming a big pointless overblown mess which was going absolutely nowhere.

The loss of Duchovny wasn't the reason the show failed, the loss of Duchovny was simply a big symptom that the show was already failing.

X-Files has held up well for me till the episodes where Mulder kinda disappears and that guy from Terminator 2 takes over. Never got into that. Also I think the first movie has aged rather well. The 2nd movie... well thats just god awful

Just started re watching the series with my brother on Netflix the other day and I must say, yes it has aged very well. We made it halfway through season 1 in one sitting and it's been so long since I've seen the early episodes that it was almost like watching a new series again :D.

Yes. I watched the entire series again a couple of months ago and I really enjoyed it. The quality starts to dip near the end of the series, but overall, it is one of my favorite TV series.

I wouldn't say that quite yet. Fringe has the potential to become the superior show, but so far the first two seasons of X Files blows the first two seasons of Fringe out of the water IMO.

I love Fringe a small bit more than the X-files, but unless it picks up more fans this upcoming third season it might get canceled. Fox almost didn't re-new it this season.

I haven't seen an episode of Fringe, but I am inclined to started watching it after reading some comments.
