I've had my wisdom teeth out, but that did not require general anesthesia (putting you to sleep). That would be an interesting experience IMO. To actively be put to sleep. I'd probablybe sitting there as aware as I could be wondering if it would work or how it would feel. Anybody ever have anything major done?

No, the worst has been growth removal, that's about it.

I had open heart surgery when I was younger. Aside from that, I've had my wisdom teeth removed and had surgery on one of my eyes to repair a tear duct.

I once had surgery just above my eye. The worst part was when they stuck a needle into my eyeball. I wasn't asleep but I couldn't feel any pain. So I just watched them as they performed on my eye.

yea, severing your ACL does not hurt as much as people lead on, it does swell like a SoB, and makes it thousands of times easier for subsequent knee twistings. now the surgery and recovery sucked hard, that was when i found out drugs lesser than morphine are worthless (this was a year or two beforeoxycontin hit the market)

Surgery always looks terrible and you shouldn't look at pictures of the actual procedure. I think reading about it would be enough. I've seen surgery many times irl. So imagine how I feel at the prospect of having any sort of surgery:?

I saw in a pic they had the guy capillaries pulled down below the nostril, that was nasty. When they put you under anesthesia are you completely knocked out and unaware of everything? (I've never had plastic surgery before)

I had knee and shoulder surgery. I basically have pins holding my knee together and staples in my shoulder...it makes a fun game for my wife when I walk through the metal detectors in places and she gets to say it will go off here, here, here, and here (the other two are that I have ear rings and always wear steel toed boots). Actually an interesting story for me about being put to sleep for my knee surgery. They gave me the stuff to fall asleep and after 30 mins they put me in a bed in the OR waiting for the drugs to take effect and the whole time I'm thinking, "Man I hope this kicks in soon!" After 20 more mins of waiting a Dr comes in and says, "Ok count backwards from 100" so I started ,"One Hund" and I was out! Those magical numbers ha ha!! The scary part was that I did wake up a little during surgery and all I remember was opening my eyes and seeing all the staff around me and hearing a nurse say,"Sh*t, he's awake!" and boom I was out again.

Technically yes, you should be completely knocked out and totally unaware. Just like sleeping, you'll wake and it won't seem like much time has passed.

i had reconstructive surgery on my elbow when i was younger. if i can remember correctly, there was one procedure to get everything mostly attached, one to put in all the hardware, and then 2 to take it out. i was so happy to get the major screw taken out. it was drilled into the bone and stuck out just enough to bump into things as i walked by :P

Yes, half a year ago. I was playing Karate and the irony is that I was actually hitting and the hit was so strong that it got my right shoulder dislocated. I'm still recovering from the surgery. It'll probably take another half a year to return back to normal.

Holy smokes. That's real serious stuff. Was it some congenital defect or something along those lines? Surgery on heart valves is pretty tricky stuff.

I've had the equivalent of 5 teeth taken out at once (4 wisdom teeth plus a bit extra). That's about it.

I've always wondered what that would be like. Going from being aware to immediately asleep. I'd almost try to fight it to see how long I could remain conscious.

The day my fingertips were amputated, I think I remember getting to 97 and don't remember anything until I woke up. That includes not remembering the wanting to be taken outside (it was December in VA at the time) so I could smoke and wanting the cross taken off the wall of the room I was in.

It's definitely pretty weird. One minute I'm wide awake thinking "okay this isn't doing anything, it just smells a little weird" and the next thing I know I'm waking up.

I think it would be a hard thing to fight even for a few extra seconds.

That's pretty much it. You don't even dream while under. Everything just cuts out.....and then you wake up and a nurse is pulling bandages out of the corners of my mouth.

No. I've need a couple of fillings so I've had mild anaesthetics for that, but I was still aware. Even when I fractured my wrist they didn't need to do anything besides put it in a cast and let it heal by itself.

Had open heart surgery (Mustard Proccdure) for a defect called Transpositition of the Great Vessels before I was a year old. Beyond that I've been put under general for a couple of different proceedures. And yeah, from the moment you pass out from the drug to the moment you wake feels pretty much like the blink of an eye.

Wow. Glad you made it. I think that's a pretty serious congenital defect. I cant remember all the specific heart ones, but any surgery involving the major vessels and heart is usually pretty dangerous stuff.
