heck yes I have. I've read the Silmarillion and the Unfinished tales of Numenor and middle-earth. i have also read the Hobbit and the Lord of the rings series. J.R.R. Tolkien's middle-earth is just huge.

I've read the main ones (tLotRs + Hobbit), but not the dozns of back story books.

My favorite of the books is Hobbit. Very well balanced story. Hope they don't screw up the movie.

ive read lord of the rings, the hobbit, the silmarillion, and the children of hurin (edited notably by christopher tolkien). the hobbit and lotr will always be special books to me, but my favorite of the bunch is the children of hurin. it really should be held up along with hobbit and lotr as it isnt just a biblical weaving of short stories. it is its own story but it obviously fits in well with middle earth lore. id highly recommend it to a tolkien fan of any degree.

I've read the Lord of the Rings books, the Hobbit, the Silmarillion, and The Children of Hurin. I liked them all very much, though the Silmarillion dragged at times.

Yes I've read The Hobbit, which I thought was rather spiffy, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy which were very hard to get through as I found them incredibly plodding and boring -- and I read them right after reading The Brothers Karamazov.

only read the Hobbit. couldnt get into the main story arc books because they are too dense and boring for the first few dozens chapters.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm one of those people who appreciate what Tolkien created and the world he crafted. But I've always felt as a writer he was....we'll call it lacking.

For being THE high fantasy trilogy that all other fantasy is measured against. LOTR is surprisingly unexciting and at times downright boring to read. Tolkien's famous attention to detail would of been much appreciated if he spent more than a few paragraphs describing some of the more dramatic and action oriented points in the books. But seems to have no problem going on and on in great detail about things that weren't particularly relevant to the story.

As much as I am a fan of LOTR and respect Tolkien's work. I could never EVER go back and read any of his books again.

I've read all three LotR books, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. All of them many times except The Silmarillion which was a pain to read through even once.

Absolutely, The Silmarilion, the Lost Tales, Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings are all excellent examples of literature. Tolkien had a creative mind like none other. His world is vast and very full!

Big Tolkien fan. I've read the four main ones, being of course The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings(which I'm actually reading again currently), The Silmarillion, and The Children of Hurin (though Christopher Tolkien probably deserves as much of a writing credit on this as his father does). I haven't delved into the 'History of Middle Earth' series, as I'm not particularly interested in academic study of Tolkien's writings (despite how much I love them).

Read LOTR books and The Hobbit, never got around to read Silmarrillion horgen123

The Silmarillion is a pretty complex book. It covers a lot of Middle-Earth's history, much of which was alluded to in The Lord of the Rings, so there's a lot of names, places, and events to take in. And the first chapters deal with the creation of the world and such. Those chapters read almost like a religious text.
