a lot of preferences have been shaped over the years, but some in part may have to do with instinct according to science. i don't think it is an ingrained instinct, but a lot of scientists believe we have some sort of attraction based on a person due to their ability to pass on genes (for example a woman marrying a strong man becuase he could protect the young) but what attracts people is the subject of a lot of debate in psychology, philosophy and many other disciplines.
but looking at the fact models are considered 'ideals' it is easy to see that thoughts on attractiveness have beeen shaped because those women could not carry a baby to term if they could even get pregnant (which is a factor some scientist believe was ingrained when choosing mates). so in reality it can't be one or the other but a combination of both
I'm nowhere near the model of attractiveness that most women seek for, but I've been able to go on a few successful dates. There was one instance, a blind date, that didn't turn out very well, though. We had finished watching a movie and we were chilling, relaxing, when a couple of guys, who were up to no good started making trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight and my mom got scared. She said "You're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air....QuinnTheEskimo

Its all evolutionary instincts, any anthropologist can tell you all this. Tall equals bigger thus more powerful among animals. Dark has to do with being active in the outdoors where survival work is done (a sickly weaker human would be less able to do work and thus more stationary and less exposed to the sun and HENCE more pale). Handsome is about looking less sickly. An injured creature will look less symmetrical and so they are unwanted and considered ugly.
Its all about natural selection and survival see.

I don't agree with the bit about being dark...I think the perception that tanned skin is considered more attractive is more of a *cultural* thing rather than an instinctual thing. Just that, it seems most people from Asia love pale skin rather than tanned skin, and I noticed a lot of women there try really hard not to tan. Like even though it's boiling hot and its like 100 degrees, women would pull on long UV protected gloves up past their elbows or walk around under UV protected umbrellas when they're otuside. I'm born and raised in America...so I think tanned = healthy = attractive, but my parents don't like tanned skin at all (they're not from America).
I mean of course there's a difference between being pale, as in fair skinned, and pale as in sickly =P But I think it's a cultural thing to find tanned (like bronzed) skin attractive.

because the attractive ideal has shifted away from evolutionary ideals. look at how skinny models are. they are a far cry from the big hipped women that were 'attractive' less than a hundred years ago. models couldn't even carry a baby to term if they could concieve. humans are no longer controlled purely by instinct. and to answer your question for some strange reason the attractive ideal has shifted to smaller, perhaps because there is less danger from wild animals and perhaps because of the advance of weapons a male no longer has to be 'big' to give protection. who knows it is just conjecture

i wish i was a lesbian, would make my life easier. (inside joke) guys are jerks... j/k i love guys. i go for the tall (or at least taller than me which is not hard) and piercings. piercings are HAWT! but i am less about looks and more if we share interests and such. i'd rather have an OK looking guy who i could hold an intelligent conversation with than a muscle man (which grosses me out anyway) airhead.
