this is for those of you who like the bands who just essentially scream into the mike for the entire song. my question to you is do you actually consider that talent or just endurance? also i dont mean screaming lyrics i mean just screaming.

Depends on the band really.. some extreme metal acts are very talented and others, not so much.

I don't consider it a talent or a feat of endurance. I consider it an indictment against their vocabulary skills that they can't better express themselves.

Screaming for an extended period of time is hard no matter how you look at it. I've done it before, I still practice Metal vocals, and it's not easy at all. It takes practice just like anything else.

Its a little of both, especially if the band tours a lot. But I don't like bands that just scream into the microphone, that gets a little irritating.

I like bands that at least have some sort of melody to it. Grindcore bands like Napalm Death don't have much appeal to me. However, I like the vocals of Agalloch, Immortal and Killswitch Engage.

Like I said before, melodic screaming is fine. I can't stand grindcore vocals that are just constant guttural grunts or squealing. Sure, it's something that can work well sometimes, but albums full of it are just annoying.

Screaming and growling are two different things

esp screaming becasue to scream for along period of time it takes alot of air

Just because you can't understand it doesn't make it screaming. Dream Theater never screams and it usually takes me a few listens to figure out what they are saying.

This isn't opera. If you're focusing to vocals, you're in the wrong genre.

I really don't know or listen to any bands that just scream into the mic. But the people that growl/scream are talented IMO, I mean you try it for anything longer than a minute. Your throat will bleed :P

Bands I'm talking about: Nile, Cryptopsy (Lord Worm), Dying Fetus.

There's no "talent" to it, really. Anyone can do it if they get a safe technique down, though it does take a lot of practice to get it right and it does take a lot of endurance.

I conisder it a sixth instrument in a way (seeing as most of those bands are five pieces)...I don't really like it, but I've seem some local bands do it and it was okay.

The most impressive metal singers are ones who can scream out as loud as can be and still be able to harmonize with the chorus lines.

I don't listen to the people that just scream the whole song. I don't like it.

Your opinion of what screaming is and what it isn't might be different then mine though. Care to tell us what band you were listening to?

Its a combination of talent and endurance. First of all its very difficult to constantly "scream" for 3-5 minutes. Its also talent, not everybody can have a convincing, powerful and a lot of times melodic voice while "screaming/roaring" (or whatever you want to call it).

Both, I take it not as "Screaming" but using your throat as an intrument to blend in perfectly into the mood of the song. I call it a growl.. It's something "most" newer bands fail to do right. Listen to Death's "Human" album, Obituary's "Cause of Death", or Carcass' "Necrotism" to namea few.

Every one of those bands names have something to do with dying: Death, Obituary, Carcass..
