Isn't this like the 3rd time in a few months this has happened? Pilots whats up with that.Ace6301
A lot of pilots are quite competent under VFR conditions, but not quite so under IFR.
VFR = Visual Flight Rules, where you can see where you're going.
IFR = Instrument Flight Rules, where you can't.
If you rely on your senses under IFR conditions, you can find yourself in trouble. For instance, it may feel like you're gaining altitude when in fact you're just gaining speed, because both will put you back in your seat.
The story says it was foggy, so I'm guessing IFR.
Pilots are largely an ego-driven group of people, and 'flying by the seat of your pants' still unfortunately maintains quite a bit of macho appeal.
