I am in need of some help guys! I downloaded something and once I opened the file, it made my desktop flicker and stuff. Firefox won't work properly now either. For example, if i type gamespot in google, the link will just take me to some random page with some muslims singing and a s*** load of advertisments. The only way i was able to post this thread is because i have it in my bookmarks (bookmarks seem to work properly). I have 'AVG' anti virus but it didn't pick up anything? Any ideas on what i can do to get rid of this? I would really appreciate any help!

PS: Don't link me to stuff as i will just be hearing them muslims singing again lol

you are either lying or are misinformed. having linux as a backup operating system is a great idea for this reason.

And now you've come to infect the rest of us. I agree with the man who said to run a second operating system and virus scan from there. If you don't have AVG Free, I would recommend doing that. It's much more fuctional even than Norton. But don't have multiple virus programs cause they'll see each other as virus'. :P

There are not just 2, but 4 possibilities here: 1) I am lying 2) I am misinformed 3) You are lying 4) You are misinformed Or, it could be a combination of any of these.

Other that the browser hi-jack can you go into more detail about the symptoms you're getting on your desktop?

Also running a virus scan from a second OS won't do anything, it's on a seperate partition.

people scan windows partitions everyday on linux. stop being wrong. just because something is on a seperate partition does not mean you cant access it.

By this logic a virus scanner on your C:\ drive won't detect viruses on your D:\ drive. You mean different operating systems. And yes a virus scanner will detect virus definitions on the other OS in a multiboot setup. You can even boot a virus scanner on your USB and scan a hard disk drive.

I am using XP home.

Check if you have a restore point for system restore. A good antivirus might get rid of three quarters of the viruses and will not fix damage done to your browsers and possible system files. A system restore works best.

The Vista system restore works best, though. I'm not sure about Windows XP.

Basically, every 4-5 mins, my desktop will flicker as if it opens a new browser and then closed it again. I can't really explain it properly. Also, I don't have a second partition so I wouldn't be able to do what that other guy said.

you sir, are right. Why? Because ive scanned known viruses with it and it said it was clean. AVG has never been a good antivirus, even by antvirus scanner standards which are pretty low

hoosin91
Basically, it's because AVG sucks. Sorry about how that sounds harsh, but it does. I suggest getting rid of AVG and picking up Avira AntiVir, then ask around for a rootkit finder and then you should be set.

AVG is no good. Even if you have a good antivirus, the best ones only detect about 65% of new viruses.

Yeah sounds like malware which should be fixable.

You'll want to get to another computer and download Spybot Search and Destroy, Procexp.exe (you're on win XP right?) and Hijackthis.exe.

Get them back to the first computer with a USB or something.

You can save a log file from Hijackthis which you could paste here if you want so someone can pick out the malware.

Try running a Spybot sweep, it should be able to knock out the malware unless it was written well enough to block spybot from running/installing.

If that doesn't work you could try a system restore, unless you've turned it off you can run it from Start/Accessories/System Tools. Choose a date before the infection and it will roll back your system to that previous state (you'll lose anything that was added after that date).

If that somehow doesn't work you can use Procexp.exe to view all the running processes on your system, carefully investigate and resaerch any you aren't sure about. If you can narrow it down with 100% certainty use Hijackthis to destroy the process and its files. Don't kill anything you're not sure about or you could end up in a worse situation.

Thanks for the detailed explanation :) I have managed to borrow a laptop with internet access so I will try what you said. I will post again once I have tryed it. Thanks again!
