Do you know what stereotyping is? And if you don't find "all that nonsense" funny, my guess would be that you're not very good at English.

Monty Python > Dane Cook...Samwel_X
every comedian ever > Dane Cook I'm not saying American comedians are good...most of them suck now. But people tend to love British ones for some reason and I think their as bad as the current American comedians. George Carlin and Eddie Murphy (from the 80's and early 90's) is where it's at!

every comedian ever > Dane Cook

Fair point.

In all fairness Bill Hicks (an American) is the greatest comedian of all time.

its not that all British comedians are funny, but we seem to have lots of successful comedians which is suprising seeing as our population is tiny compared to the US who see to churn out funny but 'samey' comedians.

And as for Monty Python...how can you not find that show funny? Sure, not every joke is great but most of it is!

It's an opinion... If you don't like it, don't watch it. What isn't funny to you may be hilarious for somebody else. What sounds like crap to you may sound amazing to someone else. What tastes terrible to you may taste godly to someone else. These are all matters of opinion.

And for someone who just claimed not know what the word pretentious means, I'm guessing you just aren't getting many of the jokes.

Well surely a comedian is someone who gets paid to be funny so saying comedians are funny is just like sying bakers make bread, and if your looking at it that way your saying the stereotype is bakers make bread but i dont like some types of bread.

The only major diference between british and american comedians is that british comedians take the piss out of ourselves, as well as other people. American comedians just take the piss out of other people. You will never hear an american comedian taking the piss out of americans (except maybe minority groups). British comedians take the piss out of EVERYBODY, incluiding ourselves, which makes british comedy much better in my opinion.

I've never heard of the stereotype that British comedians are funnier than others. Monty Python was a great group - but their sense of humor may not appeal to all.

Half the comedic routines in the US involve poking fun at ourselves or our various subcultures . . . . . . .

Replace Jimmy Carr with Bill Bailey and I'll agree with you entirely.

EDIT: Both British and American comedy groups have their bad share. We have Jim Davidson, you have Carrot Top. By and large I find British comedians more creative and wittier. But that's my personal preference.

As a British person i want to know where this funny comedian stereotype came from?

We have some excellent comics like Billy Connelly but for every good one theres a Roy Chubby Brown.

British comedy is generally a bit more subtle than the American brand. There are exceptions of course.

Some of the Monty Python stuff just requires slightly more than a high school education to be funny. If you've taken an intro to Philosophy class, the philosopher's soccer game is hilarious. If you haven't, it's a soccer game with some Greeks and Germans and one Chinese dude. They really were very good writers, and the way some of their episodes come together kind of boggles the mind. If you're talking about the movies not being funny, I can kind of agree with that.

Otherwise, in Brits vs. Americans, I think that comparison is unbalanced due to the sheer number of bad comedians who get airtime here as opposed to there. We've both got some hilarious comedians, but when Dane Cook/Carlos Mencia/etc., etc., etc. get all the spotlight, the good ones get a couple of big shows and thats it.
