i only like to have big budget movies with lots of 'slposions and special effects.slvrraven9That's unfortunate I mean the movie has action like that but that's all near the end. Most of the film is a social commentary on the apartheid in South Africa. I think it'd fly over you and you wouldn't like it a lot if that's the type of film you like though the last 30 minutes don't disappoint.
For a movie budgeted at only $30 million, the special effects were quite effective. The prawns were especially well animated, as well as the giant mech near the end. However, there arent "splosions" every few seconds like a Michael Bay or Roland Emerich movie. It is a definite day one Blu-Ray buy for me. The God of War 3 demo just sweetens the deal for me
Fantastic movie. Buy it when it comes out. When you get disappointed because of your tastes in movies is not here, we will have one more sale to help get a bigger push for the sequel :D

It's a great movie, but if you're just looking for explosions, I'd recommend Star Trek over it.
That was a masterpiece of exploding things.
of course i picked up the sarcasm dude. but the point is that it didnt add anything, nothing at all worthwhile to the discusison other than to benefit his own quest for a higher posting level..Someone's sarcasm meter must be broken, because it registered on mine. Also the movie made over $100 million, so 15 million people in America.saw it

WOW, well with so many people giving it a thumbs up here i guess ill go pick it up tomorrow! ill also pick up star trek just for the 'splosions and whatnot! i mean really, how can you not like those big budget everything everywhere (but with a good story) type action, special effects movie on Blu Ray?District 9 looks very good in HD.

It's good but odd. I would recommend watching it before buyign it. Or rentign it first. Because it's not for everyone I liked it though.

I think you'll probably like it.
It's a smart action-filled science fiction movie from an obviously talented newcomer to the movie industry, and it's great.
Nice little smart action movie that looks great and was shot on a refreshingly small budget of $30 million, showing that you don't need huge bloated budgets in order to make a great movie.
But it's really cool. Some people criticize it for "plot holes", though I ted to think of it as the movie not needing to explicitly spell everything out for the audience.
Others love the first half of the movie, while criticizing the second half for degrading into a standard Hollywood "shoot-em-up" style. While there's certainly some fair validity to this claim, I still like the movie because the standard action stuff was very well done, and pretty damn cool.
All in all, it was a refreshingly intelligent science fiction movie, until it turned into a standard action movie. And once it turned into a standard action movie, it was the best videogame movie I've ever seen (that wasn't based on a videogame).
It's cool beans, give it a try. Some smart social commentary, a lot of cool and extremely violent videogame-style action (complete with a particularly cool mech that was ****ing badass) and some nice little existential themes reminiscent of David Cronenberg's remake of The Fly.
Or let's put it another way. Have you ever seen that movie "Enemy Mine" starring Dennis Quaid and Louis Gosset Jr? In a lot of ways, it's sort of similar to "Enemy Mine", only about a thousand times better and more awesome.
Not everyone likes it, but it's pretty darn good, and has gotten a hell of a lot of critical praise. It's definitely worth watching, though you may want to rent it before you buy it.

This is not a standard action movie. We haven't seen such gritty, gory and - most importantly - inventive action since Starship Troopers. Claiming District 9 degrades into a typical Hollywood shoot-em-up only shows how little attention these critics pay to the movies in general.
