Is it disgusting to anyone else how people are taking the Higgs Boson out of context simply because it has the nickname "God Particle?" I was browsing Twitter and saw numerous Tweets of people taking it out of context to either support or refute the existence of God when clearly it provides evidence for neither.

"God Particle" is simply an analogy that states finding the Higgs Boson and understanding why things have mass would be such an instrumental finding to understand the workings of the universe that it can be compared to someone who has faith in God and for them the existence of God gives them meaning and understanding to life. It's an analogy that emphasizes the grandness of such a discovery and has nothing to do with faith or creation.

All that's changed is that the Higgs Boson exists, it exhibits a Higgs Field, it gives other particles their mass.

The whole God Particle thing is unfortunate and why physicist have tried to disassociate themselves from the term, focusing on the Higgs descriptions. Some people are afraid that all this science will impinge on their faith, but a greater understanding of the universe doesn't mean that it's proof that God doesn't exist.

I lol when people, religious or atheists, start making claims when some scientific breakthrough is made because I truly know that the MAJORITY of them have absolutely no idea what the actual thing is about.

Don't do things like bringing reason to the interwebs and especially to the GameSpot Bonk Offtopic forums.

You cant let what people say on the Internet piss you off, this of course is much easier said then done considering that what some people say on the Internet can be considered some of the most uninformed, illogical and moronic statements ever said by our species. We must not let these people cloud the Internet with their stupidity, the Internet deserves better.

Don't know if it is true or not. I did read an article today that stated that it was actually meant to be called the Goddamn particle, but it didn't pass with that wording.

To put it simply it's a subatomic particle whose interaction with other subatomic paticles, such as protons, neutrons, electrons etc... gives them their mass. That's it, it gives us more understanding of "stuff" and why "stuff" acts a certain way under certain conditions. No inherent God-like or God-refuting powers to it.

I believe you are correct, it was supposed to be "Goddamn particle."

It's not the god particle, it was the goddam particle because it was so hard to find.

Why is it even still called that? Wasn't it originally a title to a book "the goddamn particle" because of how hard it was to find? Then changed by the publisher?

That's a joke. F*cking "journalists" ran with it.

It was called The God Particle because it was central to our understanding of physics yet there was no proof of it.

It also made a good title for the book The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?

On one hand it is kind of ridiculous but that is what the media does. On the other hand, if we had this type of media coverage in 1993 for example, the funding for the super conducting super collider might not have been canned.

Like many things in science an unfortunate selection of a term can permeate the debate for decades and become even more influential than the science itself. Has happened many times and could happen this time.
