Welcome to America folks, competition was once allowed here.

That has got to be one of the most ridiculous rule out there.
Oh boo hoo, your little Johnny got upset because the other team is celebrating their victory. Let's make a rule that prevents that so Johnny doesn't feel so sad anymore.
I was debating just leaving a comment on "highschool sports -- serious business"...
But... What the hell?
Thier cool with kids getting concussions and breaking bones over the years, but God forbid they see someone put their arms in the air.
I can see a penatly for a kid getting a goal/touchdown/scoring then puling their shirt over their head and flailing their middle fingers at the opposing team and their families, but from the sounds of it the guy was just happy he got a touchdown.
Has there been some big problems in the past with kids being too cocky about winning a game in football? I'm used to people being a bit cocky after scoring in hockey. There's even a button for it in vidya games.
Edit: I guess if they've known about the rule it's on them for not following it. Question is why the rule exists in the first place...

Less a matter of it being about a highschool championship and more a matter of ass-backward rules that presumably exist so people don't get their "feelings hurt".Thier cool with kids getting concussions and breaking bones over the years, but God forbid they see someone put their arms in the air.
... on that though, it wouldn't be like someone is condemning someones appearance, personality, race, or views of faith... It'd be someone gloating that they got point(s)... In a sports game.
The only allowed endzone celebration is the Tebow. I thought everyone knew that.
Pirate700
what is a Teebow?
thats so stupid. you should be allowed to celebrate to your hearts content. i never understood that rule. pygmahia5I understand the goal of the rule in HS football. They want to teach good sportsmanship and not to be a bad winner. Unfortunately the rule is so strick it takes a lot of the fun out.
I understand the goal of the rule in HS football. They want to teach good sportsmanship and not to be a bad winner. Unfortunately the rule is so strick it takes a lot of the fun out. I've always interpreted sportsmanship to allow for honest celebration after scoring, as long as you're not directing it at someone on the other team. That's generally the accepted behavior in my league.
thats so stupid. you should be allowed to celebrate to your hearts content. i never understood that rule. Pirate700

I think that's the issue there. He hadn't scored. He was 'flaunting' the fact that he was about to score and the other team wasn't going to stop him.
What he did, in my book, was perfectly fine. I think the rule was implemented to cut out the flagrant taunting and 'excessive' celebrating. Neither of which this young man did.
Sooo much stupidity with that rule. I seriously fear for our future generations. These idiots are going to leave their children completely unready for the harshness of the real world with how much they smother them from any little bit of disappointment...
Boo hoo, the other team scored a goal and is celebrating it. Live with it!
Jesus Christ...

Unfortunately the rule is so strick it takes a lot of the fun out. idk...everybody's interpretation of "good sportsmanship" is different. but i guess i can understand that they want to prevent fights or somthing maybe? Cuz I know some people that would fight cuz someone celebrated too much.
thats so stupid. you should be allowed to celebrate to your hearts content. i never understood that rule. thats...just not right, the players should have gotten suspended, but dont take a win away from the whole team, thats just not right
Not saying I completely agree with the rule, but if you're running it in for the game winning touchdown, don't you want to make sure you've got it before you start to celebrate? He was obviously celebrating and if he had got caught during the celebration, he would have been in more trouble than he is now. I would have gotten pissed if I was the coach and my athlete lost the ball because of premature celebration.
"Prior to kick-off, both coaches and captains met to discuss the rules for the game and in that particular meeting, the referees reminded the participants that they wouldn't be allowed to celebrate a touchdown before it was scored."
On the rule, I think it's a dumb rule, but it's a rule. Athletes should know the rules of their sport, the athlete (or coach's) own fault. They should have petitioned to remove the rule before they broke it.
P.S. Even if there was a penalty, time hadn't run out, they had more chances to win still. It's the same as a bad holding call on a game winning play, happens more often than you think.
"bans any celebratory or taunting behavior by someone scoring a touchdown."
Thats gotta be the most stupid law ever made, society is so worried about being politcaly correct they don't know when to draw the line anymore.
He only raised his arm for like a second.
I mean he didn't do this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dmqGg6Ccvw ,or anything remotely as bad.
What a stupid rule.

agreed, and taking the touchdown back is too harsh. Excessive celebration or not, they earned that touchdown.
I dont know...maybe the penalty could be that you dont get to take the point after? Or maybe you are penalized 15 yards on the kickoff? Hell, take a timeout away from the team.
I remember this happened to me during football. It was third down and I sacked the quarterback, and I stood up really fast and pounded my chest for like three seconds, and I was charged 15 yards. What should have been a punt the next play and the ball in our possession turned into a first down for the other team :(
That sucks. Not much else to say. I know it's a rule, but to lose your game that way really does suck.
Bad rule, but the player knew the rule and chose to ignore it so it's his own fault.
worlock77
Yeah, but he was in the moment knowing he was going to win it all for them. I doubt that dumb rule ever crossed his mind.

some rules defy common sense, though. In other words, when you break said rule, everyone goes "wait, what?"
So, yes, while most players know the majority of relevant rules, there are still a few stupid rules tucked away that get brought up from time to time. I doubt he ignored the rule, I think he likely didnt even know it existed.

If he didn't know the rule existed then perhaps he should have been paying attention.
