I strongly disagree with your choice, but hey, I went through a rap phase so I'll point you in the direction I was looking!
Definitely check out old Jay-Z, 2Pac, Eminem, Bone Thugs, NERD, Nas is pretty decent, but for the love of god avoid 50 Cent and all those glorifying dickweeds. Basically avoid anything from the last 4-5 years lol.
One of the few rap/hip hop songs I still listen to is "Bully" by Eminem, it just flows, it's a great song. Oh and if you like dancey type hip hop, check out "Tetris" by DacaV 5. It's pure awesome haha.
Liquid Swords- GZA one of the best albums
The Pharcyde- An awesome, pass the mic type of album
Wu Tang
Biggie

lol I was just playing around, but I see that alot of Hip Hop and Rap people do just that.
I don't mind rap i just think that around 80% of it is terrible, the old stuff is great though. Well for starters here a sample of American Hip Hop Artists:
Big L - (Lifestyles Ov Da Poor and Dangerous - awesome album)
Big Daddy Kane
Eminem
Run DMC
Forthright MC
Wu Tang
Necro - (An awesome rapper but all his songs are about death, if you can stand it then great)
Tupac
If you get into it you should find some great rappers but try and avoid the ra-... uhh hip hop that is famous nowadays, like 50 cent and Timbaland for example.
