Would you rather listen to flow (Rakim, Biggie, Jay-Z) or lyrics (Pac, NaS)

I listen to both, when I listen to flow, it just pumps me up, I don't even care what their saying. Biggie rapped pretty much the same thing as mainstream rappers do today (Ho's, guns, sex) but it was his internal rhymes and multisyllables that made me forget what he was talking about.

When I listen to songs with good lyrics, alot of the times I get shivers down my spine.

" A place I spend my quiet nights/time to rewind, so much pressure in this life of mine/I cry at times, I once contemplated suicide/I woulda tried but when I held that nine/All I could see was my momma's eyes" -Pac

"A corrupted young mind, at the age of 13/ n*gga never had a father and his mom was a fiend/She put the pipe down, but for every year she was sober/ Her son's heart simultaniously grew colder" -Immortal Technique\

what would you listen to

I can't choose because like you said, a nice flow pumps you up but sometimes lyrics can just send shivers down the spine.

why does everyone say pac had great lyrics? Some of his songs had great lyrics, not all. He was mostly a flow rapper like all the other mainstream rappers. He was great tho, no doubt, along with biggie.

Why not both like Mos Def and The Roots do?

Of course I can listen to either or and be equally happy but it takes a really great artist to be able to mix both well

Most of my favorite rappers have both the good flow and the ill lyrics.

Both are really important to me. No one wants to listen to a rapper that has a boring flow, and no one wants to hear a rapper that has Soulja Boi lyrics.

A question like this only assumes that one cannot have both characteristics as an emcee. That being said, I'd have to go for flow, for myself. The voice is an instrument and, no matter how meaningful/inspiring/comedic the lyrics are, a choppy flow can screw it up for you.

Yeah, that is true.

There are great rappers out there that have great flow and send a message.

Well for me a good song has to have both but I prefer the flow over lyrics most of the time.

I disagree. NaS has an o.k. flow, his flow was amazing in illmatic but it has gone down after every album except stillmatic.

I thought that Pac's flow was decent, but not in the level of Rakim, Biggie, or Jay(He has so many different flows).

Theres this one rapper, who strings together somewhat random words and it just about makes sense and is sometimes plain funny. Anyone have any idea what his name is? He is very much non-mainstream, he was a guest artist with the Gorillaz, and he has a fantastic flow, but I cannot remember his name for the life of me.

Eminem is considered one of the best lyricist out there, and he can flow like an instrument. So wouldn't he be both?

both. Great artist can do both and can utilize both. However just because an artist isn't both doesn't make them bad.

What are you sayin, I mean seriously check this out.

Through the lights cameras and action, glamour glitters and gold
I unfold the scroll, plant seeds to stampede the globe
When I'm deceased, by then the beast arise like yeast
to conquer peace leaving savages to roam in the streets
Live on the run, police paying me to give in my gun
Trick my Wisdom, with the system that imprisoned my son
Smoke a gold leaf I hold heat, nonchalantly
I'm grungy, but things I do is real it never haunts me
while, funny ****ni**az roll in the pile
Rooster heads profile on a bus to Riker's Isle
Holdin weed inside they p**** with they minds on the
pretty things in life, props is a true thug's wife
It's like a cycle, n*****come home, some'll go in
Do a bullet, come back, do the same s*** again
From the womb to the tomb, presume the unpredictable
Guns salute life, rapidly, that's the ritual
