The American Pres is now totally money and rating driven. All of it. Political, sports, arts, entertainment. Things like truth, fairness, and facts are tosssed aside for Q Ratings and controversy.
Edward R Murro used to fear that the media would become its own story. That it would create stories that don't exist in order to have something to say. thats why he struggled so greatly with his ultimate choice to take on McCarthy.
His fears have been fully realized.
I don't get you. I don't pay attention to the press, anyway.CRS98you dont get me ? well I wish I could reverse evolution so I can understand your language :|

I like to keep in mind that ideally one should get information from a variety of sources, not just one publisher or news media.

I was going to say something, but hell, after this, why bother? You said it for me.
The press is the fourth pillar of government. The free exchenge of information is our surest insurance against tyranny and the the greatest safeguard for a free, democratic society.
There will always be legitimate as well as unseemly press sources. It is up to you, the citizen, to absorb the information and decide which sources are relevant and trustworthy. Not all press outlets are bad; reputable, highly ethical journalists still exist.
Here we really have two main sources of tv news, TV1 and TV3 news. AFAIK they aren't on opposite ends of the political spectrum. But they are still bias in many instances (this was especially noted in the Israel/Gaza flotilla incident). I tend to avoid them now and get my news from a separate website.

Just like politics, they're just players in the game. The public gives the media its viewership, just as it elects the government. Whether they wish to admit it or not, what they have is exactly what they have asked for. You can't blame someone simply for giving the public what they want. If they didn't, they'd be out of a job and would be replaced by someone who did.
In Saudi the official news is still firmly controlled by the state.
the newspapers are a bit better but they are still decidedly tame compared to American style journalism.
best news sources in Saudi i think are Arab News (english based) and Al-Watan.. but otherwise nothing note worthy. or it's just peddling the official government and arguing in favor of whatever the state said..
there are occasions when people are invited on Saudi TV that will surprise people. Wajeha Al-Hawadir comes to mind..
blog sites are far more interesting and thought provoking news source then anything official or credential...
American news is based on ratings. and appeals to those who wanna hear what they like to hear.
Fox News = conservatives
MSNBC = liberals
CNN = People who wanna ask numerous innane what if questions...
Typically besides Reuters, AP press. I'll read up on recent history in non-fiction books.
I will watch Al-Jazeera English, BBC, Al-Arabiya or National Public Radio. often times they got some good conversations on issues.
Australias press is actually very very free, the news isnt biased, important issues get coverage from both sides, the abc generally keeps the private networks honest. Yes there are opinionated news shows such as "today tonight" and 60 minutes but generally the media does not treat people as stupid.chris_yz80I've generally found the Australian press, alongside British, New Zealand and Canadian press, to be very, very good. Really, it's only Scandinvian countries and places like Finland and Denmark that do it any better.
I really enjoyed what Bill Moyers had to say at the National Conferance for Media Reform. Big media is a problem.
Utter crap. The Times is the only paper with any credible journalists, and even then you've really got to strain to find anything substantial between the lines.jimmyjammer69The Guardian, Independent and Telegraph arn't too terrible, not perfect but they're far from as bad as the Mail or Express. Credibility wise the Daily Star or Daily Sport are the best, though granted they've never printed a news story except for "Paige has new implants!!!! (see page 3)".

Yeah, I think pretty much everything's just slanted copypasta straight from Reuters anyway, so just pick the paper with the best crossword/bewbs/TV guide or the most transparent affiliations.
In Canada its alright. There really isn't much representation of both sides of the political spectrum (the left-focused outlets are actually trying to stop Sun Media from launching a right-focused news TV station), but at least it isn't the sensationalistic pandemonium that is the US. I don't care what the political affiliation of a news source is, or how biased they might be... I just want the facts reported and not twisted or morphed into something they aren't.
UK Press quite often fights for it's people, I will give them that. The government hasn't got it's grubby paws on them, in fact it's often causes high government employees (even the priminister) to lose their jobs after they find out they have been exploiting their posistion.
Our press is probably our countries best chance of a savior, since things are in a decline they are in the same boat as us. They don't want to see Briton turn into another China or Mexico just as much as the next man. The bankers may walk on water, but the journalists don't, they fight for us.
Al-Arabiya and Al-Watan are good, they are my go-to news source. The Kuwaiti Al-Watan at least. In Saudi the official news is still firmly controlled by the state.

I do not trust the accuracy of Al-Jazeera's political news however.
Left-focused stations like Global and CTV? Gimme a break. The CBC is all right, but I'm not crazy about the others. In Canada its alright. Well in Britain, years ago when the miners went on strike, they were beaten by the police with truncheons etc and so the miners fought back. The media changed that around and showed the miners attacking first and then the police attacking back. The press lied, only one newspaper published it as the true story.
I don't believe the press at all, they're mostly for the conservatives.
Biased fear mongering idiots hell bent on scaring the public into submission with their propensity for bringing nothing but negativity to the masses. I also cannot think of another entity that is more fundamentally untrustworthy.
The press in America seems to only tell us what it is we want to hear, or what they only want us to know. I personally find that news from Europe tends to be less biased and actually covers the whole story rather than just bits
The only thing they care about is profit. They will do whatever it takes to generate as much as possible, usually through higher ratings. To get those higher ratings they need to attract viewers, and to do that they need to make themselves standout. The route that most of them take however is to cater to a specific group and present them with exactly what they want to hear. This lack of journalist integrity and objectivity has led, or at least immensely contributed, to the hyper partisanship of the present.
Edit: To those of you who want good objective journalism, check out Shepard Smith's and Brian William's shows. PBS newshour is also very good.
