Honestly, what is the appeal of fighting games?

I'm completely curious. I don't even know how to approach the question other than with complete and utter ignorance.

I played Tekken half a dozen times in the arcade years ago. Friend and I mashed buttons, one of us won, didn't really have a clue what was happening besides our characters whacking each other and randomly jumping and ducking.

What makes it such a popular genre? Is it really that deep and complex?

What's a good game for someone like me who is vaguely interested in the genre, but well -- doesn't have a clue? I'd like something popular with a *lot* of complexity and depth.

mortal kombat is easy to get into and has a indepth story thats pretty good

king of fighters 13 wrote the book on complex controls and combos jesus christ.....

dead or alive is fun but a fight can last like 5 seconds.takes one normal hit to stun your oponent and own
