So yeah, there's The Exorcist and The Shining and a few others that still look pretty good nowadays. Then you have Insidious and The Ring for solid modern day horror flicks, and I'm hoping the new Evil Dead remake will do the original film justice.

But let's face it, the original Evil Dead is difficult to watch nowadays without cringing at the horrible effects.

Are there any other scary movies that will actually scare you in this day and age? Classic or modern?

Spellbinder still gives me the chills sometimes, especially the ending. It also didn't hurt that Kelly Preston was such a hottie then.

I never find horror movies scary, though Night of the Living Dead had a very creepy/eerie vibe.

The Wicker man.

Since it doesn't rely in special effects it's still a great film today.

Yeah because Raimi and Campbell still produced it, the director was hand-picked by Raimi himself (which obviously means he trusts the guy to do well, which in turn makes me trust him), and Jessica Lucas is ten times hotter than any of the biitches in the original film.

I love the Thing. Didn't find it too scary but I loved the atmosphere and stuff. The new one sucked real bad

The Thing 1982 is a solid remake and it holds up better and better the more I think about it.

Alien without a doubt holds up. The use of ambient sound (remember the motion tracking scene?), the nearly modern lighting, and great set pieces add to the atmosphere.

Some of the older zombie films, Day Of The Dead and to an extent Night, hold up. Dawn is hit or miss for me, sometimes I want to say it holds up but I watched it recently and it didn't.

Rec. Aimons-nous

Agreed. I'm not a big fan of 'shaky-cam' movies, but I loved Rec. I haven't seen the remake, Quarantine, and I really don't plan to just because of the comparison that I'd draw between the two.

Quarantine isnt as good as Rec, basically made for people would dont like subtitles.

If there's one movie that definitely belongs on this list, it's The Changeling (1980). Watch it and you'll see why Stephen King lists it among his favorites and why so many horror movies, incl. Insidious and The Ring, have borrowed heavily from it.

I was about 11 years old when I first saw the movie, and it gave me nightmares for weeks.

It's available as a seven part playlist on YouTube: Full Movie (107 minutes)

I've seen them both, and Rec is incredible. Quarantine is pretty alright. I saw it and wasn't floored but I wasn't disappointed either.

The first Scream film. It's funny, it's scary, and it manages to make you genuinely care about its characters. The sequels aren't near as good but the original is awesome.
