Personally, I am not much of a horror movie person. The only real horror films I've seen are Psycho (which is a masterpiece), Friday the 13th (which was lousy), Nightmare on Elm Street 1 and 3 (which were good), and parts of Scream (which was great).

I'm aware that there's a sort of a trend in horror movies where if the first is successful there will be a stream of sequels, generally declining in quality (as with many of the aforementioned).

I also get the feeling that many horror movies tend to get snubbed by critics. I've seen a number of Siskel and Ebert reviews of horror movies where they seem absolutely outraged by some of the films.

Also, some popular horror franchises get numerous sequels and have large fanbases, yet are critically panned (Friday the 13th and Saw, for example). Some of the more critically admired horror films don't tend to get a lot of sequels, though this is a pretty stupid generalization.

Anyway, just some random thoughts I had about a genre I don't watch much. Any of your thoughts? People who like horror films? People who don't? People who like some?

i found 28 days later and its sequel to both be excellent movies. that seems to be the exception though and not the norm. most sequels to me seem to be an attempt to get a quick buck without any thought of quality.

I've heard good things about those ones. As far as sequels go, I'm guessing that they seem to try to get something more out of the particular gimmick the first movie or franchise runs on, and turn up the gore. I notice that alot of horror movies seem to have some sort of gimmick - Nightmare on Elm Street had the dream thing, Saw has the deathtraps, Final Destination has the Rube Goldberg deaths, etc.

I dislike Sci-Fi. :/

I'll also correct myself, Slasher Horror is the most fun genre of film. Psychological Horror can actually be good.

horror movies that ive seen and respect are Scream 1/2(3rd started to get repetitive), Psycho(remake is fine as well), the Sixth Sense(duhhh), and best horror movies that came out recently that were good have to be 1408 and The Uninvited(BOTH are EXTREMELY UNDERRATED). theres probably a few more that I forgot about or still haven't seen, but really I think the genre has gone downhill. hope Paranormal Activity is a good movie as well as a screamer /:

My least favorite genre, I say least because my total hate of it has disappeared recently after seeing some great horror films ,e.g. Paranormal Activity and The Orphanage.

Horror is a fun genre, but it's just a shame that it has turned into a genre for sheer marketing over the years by most movie studios... Now all we seem to get are remakes and uninspired sequels. These movie studios have really given the genre a bad image. I think that if you look past these mainstream movies, you will definitely find some gems out there and realize that as long as there are people who still make movies like these, that the horror genre still has some life in it.

I would say The Orphanage, seeing how it's one of my favorite horror films of the decade. It's not a full blown horror film, but, damn, is it great. I have [REC] sitting next to me, waiting to be watched. I'm very anxious to see it. I've heard nothing but fantastic things. I plan on watching a lot of horror films this month - all of which I haven't seen.

I don't bother with the horror genre too much. Also, a lot of the horror movies I see ads for all seem way too similar.

If you enjoyed the Uninvited you MUST check out the original movie it is based off of called "A Tale of Two Sisters." Great great movie!

As for other great horror movies:

Evil Dead 2

Trick r Treat

Zombieland

The Descent

28 Days Later

Saw

Theres alot more but I can't think now for some reason.

Zombieland isn't even close to a horror movie. It's more comedy/action. Unless you were joking?

It's called a horror-comedy. Shaun of the Dead and Evil Dead 2 would also fall in that category.

I love horror, my favorite genre of movies by far. You have to look past the crap produced by the mainstream and go for the indie films. I've seen dozens of horror movies that were at least decent this year alone by renting pretty much anything that looked even remotely interesting in the horror genre, granted I saw some terrible stuff that way too.

28 days later was good, but I thought weeks was a bit average. Great intro, but the rest of it was pretty predictable. I thought 28 days later had much better characters and atmosphere. Still though its a better sequel than most.

Problem with horror sequels is that most of the time the first film has already done what the second has, only much better. The sequel is either just made for money, like the recent Descent sequel, or it is like the original only on a bigger scale like Aliens. Its hard for a sequel to be better because if it is too different to the original it will risk losing what made the original good and if it sticks too close to the formula it will be called a rehash.

i always enjoy seeing the spread of a virus and the attempts at containing it. i think it can lead to some fun sequences such as
the firebombing of the city and the soldiers in the poisonous gas with flamethrowers
. you are right that it was predictable in parts though

Evil Dead 2 is by FAR the greatest horror-comedy of all-time. It is so amazing because of just how funny it is. I think the original wasn't as good because it took itself too seriously.

While Evil Dead 1 still has the incredible cinematography that Evil Dead 2 does and the crazy s t y l e I think it was their focusing on comedy rather than scares that made the series become great a la Evil Dead 2. I honestly think Evil Dead 2 is one of the funniest movies ever.

Edit: Oh and I still need to see Drag Me to Hell.

Horror is a crap genre imo, I haven't been scared since I was 10 watching poltergeist, slasher films are just that.. slasher films. They amount to nothing more than mindless killing with normally very terrible stories. I much prefer comedies, they normally put me in a good mood.

Well I loved Evil Dead 2 also but I like the first because it was much more serious and really scared me a few times. What I didnt like in the second was the effects and stop animation because I was such a fan of the practical effects in the first one. And I didnt like the ending when you see that monster flying towards Ash, the green screen looked really bad but it is a low budget B movie so thats expected. I did how ever love the ending when hes shouting "NO!" that was so friggen awesome.

edit: Also I was expecting a DIRECT SEQUEL but what I got was a comedy remake/ sequel. It was pretty weird.

There have been some great American made horror movies lately, just nothing in the mainstream. Deadgirl and 100 Feet to name a couple I've seen in the last week. You just have to be willing to search for them.

As for Evil Dead 2, if anything the crap special effects helped add to the comedy factor. I think alot of the charm of the Evil Dead movies was how insane they were. The crazy (yet absolutely amazing) cinematography but with bad special effects just came together in a weird way.

But yeah, I do miss those old school special effects. In all honesty, the Thing has some of my all-time favorite special effects.

In my opinion, Asian Horror films tend to be better nowadays especially those from Thailand. The original Shutter was a masterpiece even if there were some plotholes.

Drag Me to Hell was a...drag. I hated the ending since she was eventually dragged down to hell after all.

Horror Movies are good when they build suspense to a surprise ending rather than slasher flicks that rely on jump scares.

Sequels used to be good when every film franchise decided that they need to extend into a trilogy. Sequels became crap and far too rushed.

There are some standout Horror Movies (Rec is my favourite) but a lot of the time, I feel Horror is a mistreated genre.

People can still see you "SPOILER" text :x wth?! I love any Horror movies that deal with the undead. Also The Strangers was pretty creepy.
