House Passes Amendment To Block D.C.'s Decriminalization Of Marijuana

Source: Huffington Post

The House Committee on Appropriations added an amendment to a spending bill blocking DC decriminalization of marijuana.

"Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), who proposed the amendment in committee, said that his background in medicine motivated his efforts to block the District law.

'As a physician, I have read study after study on the devastating effects of marijuana use, especially on developing brains of teenagers,'"

DC voted to decriminalized marijuana for Washington DC adult residents in November, not to "hey lets provide free weed to teenagers dude."

Could this be an effort to keep African Americans in jail?

"'That Rep. Harris is picking on a majority black district and no other jurisdiction with marijuana decriminalization is very telling. His own state has decriminalized marijuana but he's not interfering with it,' Bill Piper, director of national affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance, said in a statement."

What a surprise, Mr Harris' biggest campaign donor in 2014 is the pharmaceutical industry.

It also makes me pretty uncomfortable that the house is able to dictate policy in DC the way they do without the residents having any say in the matter.

Let's not jump to conclusions here. Piper's comment is senseless, DC is a federal district subordinate to Congress, Maryland is a sovereign state, so Congress has less authority to tell them what to do. The House appropriates money to DC because it is a federal territory, so Harris isn't "picking on a majority black district".

In any case Cannabis is still against federal law.

Of course it would be illegal in DC, if politicians got their hands on it they'd be too easy going and that'd rock the boat, DC needs politicians to be the calculated self-interest serving sociopaths that can be manipulated by other calculated self-interest serving sociopaths; that's the way things have always been. We can't have people that are too laid back that they start to question the social and political authority of those that mean to control them...

Care to explain?

No reply? Guess it wasn't much of a problem to you.
