stay-at-home wives are lazy as ****. what do they do all day anyway? what exactly is the job of a 'homemaker'? is homemaker really a fancy word for sitting on your ass all day watching soaps? if my wife ever suggested being a homemaker i'd tell her she needs to get a damn job. its 2012 man, screw being the breadwinner, we're going 50/50 on this

My wife and I chose to have our kids raised by her rather than some daycare provider. We're just weird that way I guess.

Actually taking care of three young kids is a full time and extremely stressful job.

Coming from somebody who probably doesn't have a house, or even a wife.

My wife works from home and takes care of our child. She's still the "homemaker". I don't see what's so wrong with that.

If I were married, I wouldn't really care if she wanted to be a stay-at-home wife/mother. And I wouldn't mind being a stay-at-home husband, either. It's not like choosing that role entails literally staying at home forever. And I suggest you to try being a homemaker to see that isn't nearly as easy as it seems when you do it by yourself. That said, I'd appreciate it more if we both had jobs.

If I ever got married, I would marry a woman with a career definitely. Not necessarily because of the money but simply because I feel that anyone who stays at home this much time will eventually face severe personal development issues.

Because you said this:

"...because I feel that anyone who stays at home this much time will eventually face severe personal development issues."

That shows a lack of understanding of what stay at home mothers/wives actually do and it's a pretty stupid thing to say. Exactly what I would expect from ambitiousknight. You're better than that.

But you know nothing of the social context of Gaza. The work world is possibly the only chance for women to be a part of the public life outside their houses and responsibilities. If a woman does not work, she will likely be forced to spend the majority of its time at home, even if she had nothing to do there. She will not have access to many of life's experiences and hence will lead to personal development issues.

You didn't say you were referring to housewives in Gaza in your OP.

But secondly, when a woman raises children, that becomes her job. That is commonplace throughout the world. And unless you're suggesting all women have development issues, I think you're still off the mark.

I was talking from personal experience as we all do mostly. If a woman in the US chooses to be a housewife, she will still be able to have an active social life an will have access to anything she wants. Here, not so much.

I think it's still pretty much the norm, only now you have men sometimes taking the role. Either way, I would rather my boy be taken care of by my wife, not daycare.

In my country women who choose to be housewives full time don't develop social relations with others. In fact that's where cheating from a man would come in. In US and other countries women are much more developed mentally I think. Everything has its pros and cons.

It's still the norm everywhere I think. Except in North America I think women have more freedom of knowing and deciding what they want to do. I mean I don't think a man can deny a woman the desicion of being a housewife or working a full time job and sending the kids to daycare.

I agree - family should raise a child instead of daycare if possible. In my case, I would like it if the grandparents were more involved with the child. I think it makes a difference - a positive difference.

I can understand a wife staying home if they have several young children. They can be a handful and the money you would save in day care costs would almost make up for the lost income. However, it is just plain lazy when a wife stays home after the kids are in school and the husband works. I absolutely detest when some women act like having to keep their own house clean is a "full time job" (people with real jobs manage keep their house clean just fine). My mom worked her ass off 12 hours a day at work and still had time to keep the house clean and drive me school functions, so I have no patience for whiney "I never worked a day in my life" entilted b****es.

My boyfriend and I have to work at least 40 hours a week, do our groceries, do our cooking and do our cleaning.
We don't have someone at home who can take care of that...... and it's easy!

shopping, cooking and cleaning is not a fulltime job.
Even parenting is not a fulltime job once your kids go to school.

No, we have quite a large apartment.
I do my groceries on my way home, my cooking costs 30 minutes at maximum. And when you clean only a part of your house everyday it doesn't cost that much time. You don't have to clean your entire house everyday. At 8 pm I'm done. I have about 4 to 5 hours of free time everyday.

Have you ever tried both people working 40 hours a week and to come home to clean the house? Make dinner? Think of all the money you save on daycare!

The problem with having a wife sit at home, not work and raise your kids is that if you break up you're looking at paying alimony on TOP of child support, just because she refused to work and the one supporting gets held responsible for that. It potentially can **** you in the long run. That being said, it's not impossible to fit in kids with a job after they hit a certain age. There is a point where being a house wife is lazy and just an excuse to be lazy.

Raising kids is a hard job, but something that should be handled by both parents. There really is no excuse to not work anymore, there's day-cares, school, baby sitters, family members and tons of other options. I think it's fine for awhile but it can be a huge risk if you were to ever break up. Good to raise your kids, but you don't need to be around them 24/7 as they age. Sure the first years of course, but when they get a certain age there are tons of options.

Not only that, it's much easier financially when two people are working, especially in this economy.

Edit: Though some exceptions definitely apply, like if you have a large family you have to take care of and you absouletly need somebody at home at all times of the day. Also they dont even need to work a full-time job, even just part time is fine. I dont know why anybody would want to spend 18+ years only being a housewife.

I'd say one partner should be working full time, and the other partner should be a stay-at-home parent. When the children grow older, the other partner can/should take up a part-time job, but raising your children properly is the most important thing. Why would you want to take care of a baby after a long day at work? It's stressful and not optimal for either parent. Yes, most kids who have parents that work full time turn out alright but why would you put yourself through that? I'm not in the business of having 100+ hour work weeks.
