Wow, Texas really jumped up allot.

Always thought their population was in the upper 5(even back in 1940), apparently not.

Considering 1940 was the height of the Holocaust, we were just getting out of the great depression, and racial/gender inequality was much worse than it is today....nah. I'll take 2012.

I'd say it's better now. The only real con I've seen is the cost of owning a home.

Actually, now that you mentioned that, I remember hearing about that on the history channel between pawn stars and aliens

It was how the states got their shape if I recall

The problem you do not see is if 2012 Americans were in control back then we would be speaking Japanese or German, Jews would be extinct, Amerika would not be America, and the Nazi's would spit in the face of your racial/gender equality. The quality of an American in 1940 was vastly superior to that of 2012, it is what got this country through such hard times.

In some aspects they were better, in some they were worse. I think some people tend to overrate that generation a little bit.

Yes, I think a generation filled with overt racism (to the point where white and black people couldn't share anything) wasn't as great as some people say.

We have become more equal but financially the average man is worse off. Even discounting inflation housing prices $30 out of roughly $1000 compared to out of $900 of $33,00 Rural has gone up much worse. That is discounting inflation and just going by the percentage of cost for each income to live. I know you used to be able to buy alot with a nickel.

I respectfully disagree with both of you, adjusted to inflation I believe the quality of life was greater than it is now. The consumer had much more purchasing power. Equality and technological advancement make the period we live in now better but back then the consumer was more powerful and our currency more powerful in my opinion.

Well, you are incorrect. Adjusted for inflation, wages are higher and quality of life is unequivocally higher now.

Food and drinks were much cheaper as well as healthier. Our water did not have flouride in it until the 50s. I think the 20s was certainly a better economy. I am actually not certain about the 40s so you may be right.

I am right about all of those decades. The 20s was almost like a third world nightmare with a piss poor economy relative to the one now, even if growing more quickly. Food might have been slightly, granted only slightly, cheaper, holding inflation constant, but absolute wages have objectively risen since.

And the advancement of equality and technological advancement outweighs the power of a currency overall imo.

True I will agree that overall it is better to live in this time. I feel that change really is pointless now while in the past $100 really was alot of money. I would not be depressed to live in the past as there are pros. I mean the 80s and 90s were pretty awesome... 70s and 60s had their pros as well as did all decades. I mean I think in the past the music was better but that is subjective and probably an idiotic view I possess.

$100 was a lot of money, but you made a lot fewer $100s. At the end of the day, you now have more sh!t to show for your toil than in the 40s. Wages increased steadily 'til about '70s and 80s, where nominal wages increased but real wages haven't really since.

O

I like their music to and we can listen to all of it for free.

[QUOTE="AnotherMartyr"]Our water did not have flouride in it until the 50s. -Sun_Tzu-

Its true and people like Edward Bernays brainwashed public opinion through their advertising. Flouride was used as a rat poison, and the aluminum industry needed to get rid of the flouride in the factory infact they are at the center of pushing the flouridization of the water supply. The real elite sit back manipulating public opinion, I am not some high class intellectual but the information is pretty public and disturbing. I feel that they do not bother silencing the information because they demonize those who speak out about it as conspiracy theorists. Many food products contain flouride and do not display any notice on their label that they do. The Rockafeller foundation publish letters on eugenics and we are currently going into a discussion of a one child policy like China's (which I actually have no problem with but would rather tax people for havng more childeren). Anyways I would definately say that the average American had more civil liberties back then, although minority groups and women definately are better off now in my opinion. However while we are moving towards equality we are also losing our freedoms and that is my main problem with the era we live in now. I would prefer equal opportunity and liberty. I do not view the two concepts as mutually exclusive.

Way to deflect and completely ignore the point I made.

Also LOL @ "since you got Obama things ended up pretty good". What a terrible argument. You can't just ignore the racism thing like it never happened. What you're doing is the very definition of looking at the past through rose-colored glasses.

Very true, you have successfully refuted my points on music and quality of life I concede to you on that. I do prefer some facets of the past though and I feel we are losing our liberty.

[QUOTE="AnotherMartyr"] Its true and people like Edward Bernays brainwashed public opinion through their advertising.

[QUOTE="Ravensmash"][QUOTE="vfibsux"] The problem you do not see is if 2012 Americans were in control back then we would be speaking Japanese or German, Jews would be extinct, Amerika would not be America, and the Nazi's would spit in the face of your racial/gender equality. The quality of an American in 1940 was vastly superior to that of 2012, it is what got this country through such hard times.vfibsux

:| How the hell do you know?

How do you know otherwise?

It is called being a student of history and comparing it to the pathetic crap I see these days, take OT for example.

The fact that we (although I'm British, not American) are all sitting here typing to each other on a gaming forum, on computers that the vast majority of people have access to speaks volumes about the advancement of technology, and as such the quality of life we experience.

He has studied history, Ravenbro. That gives him the credibility and authority to predict what the word would look like now if a few variables 60 years ago were different.
