This fall i will be attending University for the first time and i am wondering how much harder University is compared to high school. Some people have told be not to take more than 3 classes first semester because everyone messes up their first semester.

It wasn't much of a jump at all, IMO. I actually had less work in college than high school. The best part is if you don't feel like going to class for whatever reason, you just stay home (as long as you do so in moderation).

It's not too bad... although it depends on what major you're going for. Engineering or science degrees will have you taking more difficult first-year gen. ed. classes than say... economics or art history. Whoever told you not to take more than 3 classes is an idiot, though, since that will just screw you over down the line.

Everyone is different in how the jump is, and depending on the major. My advice, in the first semester at least, take as many classes as you feel comfortable taking. If it's 3, then it's three. If it's 5....you get the idea. It's easier to get a high GPA if your grades in the fall or spring of Freshman year are good, than trying to make a big jump in your upperclassman years, just due to the amount of credits. If your school requires core classes, try to get them done in the first 2 years, so you can focus on classes required for your major in your upperclassmen years.

If you attend classes, and do some studying outside of class, you should do fine.

BTW, I screwed up my 2nd semester of college :?

It depends on your study habits, your subject, and your university.

It's not too bad. In high school they just gave you a lot of work to make sure you know the material. College won't be as nice. For some classes, you don't have any homework at all. Just tests.

A bachelors in science or of science? "Science" isn't a major.

Well i don't have to declare my major yet and since i don't know what i am going to pick i left it kinda open. But i am leaning towards something with Biology or Chemistry or something that has both

ah you'll be fine. from my experience the math-heavy majors are the hardest. biology and chemistry aren't so bad. your school will probably have a sort of guide to help new students decide what courses to take and possibly and advising professor/senior student to help you based on your strengths/weaknesses and goals

Even though I did excellent in high school, I did even better in college. What I have to say in particular is that the performance evaluation is much more objective.

In every course you take, you should have an outline that goes over what you will be covering, what you will be graded based upon, the classroom rules, etc. Nothing more, and nothing less. And even then, some university professors can be pretty flexible in adjusting the schedule and responsive to student demand, although this is not always a good thing.

Nevertheless, I found it nothing like my high school, where I swear I never even knew what my quarterly grades were based upon. Further, there's no administrators coming after you for attendance issues, no busy work, and no hall pass required.

That said, prepare to be responsible for your own work, and making your own decisions. This might be harder or easier for different people, but in university, much more intensive time and work management is key.

If you haven't taken AP chemistry in high school, I'd recommend ordering your textbook early and working ahead a few chapters. A lot of people really struggle in it. People who know what they're getting into tend to do well. Also, you probably shouldn't take both biology and chemistry in your first semester. Two hard sciences can be rough when you're still adapting to college life. That said, I've actually found college to be a easier than high school. Then again, I put myself through hell senior year, so maybe that's to be expected.

For me it was a big jump, but thats because High School was so easy that I never developed any sort of study habits.

Here (to me), it was a downgrade, because to pass into a good University you have to study like a hound (five to six hours per day, four hours on Sunday). My suggestion? Study as much as you can, skip a few parties, and try not to miss classes. If you do well in college, it's likely that you'll get an internship in your 3rd semester, and getting a good job is much easier if you know what you're supposed to learn in your major.

My classes don't start before 14:00

Granted I have to wake up earlier than noon in any case because I always have a s***load of texts to read, but still.. having the option to wake up late is always nice.

I hope its not a big jump or huge change in lifestyle, when I go to college. Because college isn't too far away for me.

As a music major, I have 10-11 classes per semester. Its not easy. I know some engineering kids who have like 4-6... seems to be the average.

Unless you wanna study music or pre-med, it seems like the classes arent too heavy. Although the math requirements are really hard. My math career ended in algebra 2, which is actually kinda scary to think about.

Well, I'm attending university in two years and I'm not worried about it at all. As long as I turn up for class, it should be a breeze.

I took English at college during my senior year and i thought it was a lot less work than hs. Over the whole semester there was a total of 3 essays and a paper, and two easy quiz's. But it depends on the classes some are more work than others.

I took a history course to, but i dropped that, teacher was a pain, was confusing as all get out and it was exteremly boring. O and i read a crap load from a histroy book for nothing. Nothing i read was on the 1 test i took before dropping.

I actually do about the same amount of homework in college as I did in high school, but I took honors and AP classes all throughout high school with demanding teachers. One of the biggest changes, though, is the fact that your only grades in some classes may be a couple midterms and a final. You don't get credit for homework, but you better do it if you want to know the course content and do well on your tests.

Typically speaking the first semester classes are introduction level and are not too intensive for someone directly out of high school.
