- Mikhail Gorbachev, last Soviet dictator.

- he pretty much single handedly collapsed the USSR with his 2 policies of Glasnost (free press) and Perestroika (capitalism).

- He removed the Berlin Wall and "freed" Eastern Europe

- He removed troops from Afghanistan

- He was Reagan's "useful idiot" (Lenin term).

- won the noble peace prize in 1990

- Awarded the Ronald Reagan freedom award

- Pretty much won a bunch of awards in general

"We had 10 years after the Cold War to build a new world order and yet we squandered them. The United States cannot tolerate anyone acting independently. Every US president has to have a war. I sometimes have a feeling that the United States is going to wage war against the entire world." - he said this about 2 months ago.

I'd say average. It's big news, but you have to make way for stories of little children getting pepper-sprayed. Because everyone knows that those are FAR more important than these kind of things.

I would say at the most, as big as reagan's death. He was absolutely instrumental in bringing down the Soviet union, and leading Russia into a new age. I think he was a great man, worthy of a great funeral.

They might let it accidentally slip out. Nearly everyone here doesn't give a flying **** about (former) foreign leaders, no matter how huge their impact on the world was.

For what Gorbachev did, I think he will be remembered. Look at what the Pope got. Granted, that was religious, but still, Gorbachev really did do a lot for the world. He is a very smart man.

It'll be huge

It will also kickstart a Reagan retrospective into his policies and tenure and the dealings between the two

Well, the poverty level in Russia went from 1% (soviet rule) to 40% after Gorbachev. Their was crime for the first time in about 60 years because of Gorbachev (who is going to commit a crime when you got a government that kills you for pretty much anything)

A very tiny blip on their radar. They already have an agenda, and his death won't fit into it.

I completely agree. He never got the credit he deserved in bringing down the Soviet Union and ending the Cold War, in my opinion. It's ashame that his funeral and the attention it garners probably won't be commensurate to the role this guy played in shaping our world.

He's not a Hollywood actor, so probably not as much as some other, less important people (like that famous lady who died a few years ago, and had a baby daughter, I already forgot her name).

It's funny how the best Soviet leaders were the first and last. While he isn't as important in history as Lenin or Stalin, I can see his death turning into a Russian holiday. As the poster above said, I think it would do him justice if they preserve him just like Lenin in his tomb.

They can dig up Stalin and burn him though...

Russians actually LIKE stalin. He took the country from the stone age and left it with a nuclear bomb. He took the country through its most brutal war in history. He left the country a global superpower. He modernized the entire nation with new infrastructure. Most of the Russia of today is because of Stalin's actions. Though without a doubt Lenin was the best leader. Gorbachev wasn't though, he wasn't even a communist.

At the end of the day though he did win the war, and inmy eyes that is all that matters. Russia is in good shape today, thanks to Putin though. If Putin is to continue doing what he is doing, Russia will be strong again.
