I have a 13 year old nephew, he does not like school, he thinks of every little excuse he can to stay home. I was the same way when I was his age, now that I'm older and understand how important school is, I really regret it. I don't think something is going on at school because he's been like this for a couple of years. What kind of hints or what can I say to make him understand how important school is?

you can't you can only be a positive roll model and hope he emulates you. but unless you're his immediate peer that's unlikely.

Explain to him (and us) how much your life sucks as a result of not paying attention at school at 13.

Then take him to the nearest unemployment/benefit place, he'll soon be going to school then!

You can't. All you can do is hope he finds a career that requires school....then he'll work toward it.

Don't bother trying to convince him it's important. Just threaten to beat him if he does poorly and/or promise to reward him if he does well. The end result is the same.

Ask the people at McDonald's if he can do work experience for a week, and after the week is over tell him that he better go to school or he will be doing that his whole life.

But also on the flip side, try to show him a positive role model who has studied and has done well in life.

Drive him down to the homeless shelter and tell him "this is your future"! If that doesn't work then take him inside and make him eat some of the food there and that will teach him to stay in school ;)

Theres still a reason why he doesn't want to school. Many people want to go school to see their friends, even if they dislike education and get poor grades. So for a child to both dislike school and not care for the social elements, is a cause for some concern.

It could be the opposite, where he has some form of developmental delay and is struggling in school due to ADD/ADHD. Its also possible that hes smarter than you think and he isnt challenged enough in school and cares little for it.

Most people on this forum arent parents. And even the few that are, aren't necessarily good parents. Talk to a psychologist.

School isn't important? Tell him just to have fun, only college/university are important. The rest is garbage.

Is it really that important these days, you need a college degree to do anything anymore and if you dont do college then high school is a waste of time.

That's pretty much BS. All of the people I remember not caring about school in middle school continued those habits up and through high school. Assuming that he will mature into caring about school is a bad way to handle the situation.
