It doesn't make sense. Coke is one kind of pop/soda. How does it work?:?:?

Who says that? I've never heard anyone ask for a Coke and mean a Fanta or a Solo or something. I can understand Coke being used generically for all cola beveredges as, at least in Aus, it's the best seller.
In Aus we call them soft drinks anyway and not soda or pop. Not sure why. Anyone else call them something different?\
I dunno. I just say soda or the actual name of the drink. I don't like the word pop. It just sounds so weird for a drink. :PxTheExploitedSame here. I don't know anyone that says "coke" for every soda or anyone that says "pop".
It's a regional thing, typically southern US. Not sure if you guys have seen this, but it's illlustrated by this map:
Here's a link to a better view of the map.

Kudos to a company who has their brand name used in reference to a generic item. Here are a couple more examples:
bandages are more often than not called Band-Aids, which is a brand name
Also, Jell-O is nearly always refered when speaking about gelatine.
Um...I do.:|who the hell calls soda "pop" anymore?
what is this the 50's?

Look at that map posted earlier. There are regional differences. Most people who say "pop" live in the Midwest. I live in Minnesota, which is very much part of the Midwest. Go figure.

Which is why the word "brand" was awkwardly added to J&J's famous jingle.
It has to do with the dialect of the region the person lives in. People don't choose to use one term over the other, they use a certain term because it is what is used in that area. How can some people refer to soda as 'pop'? That went out with the silent movies and tommy gun.

Interesting.
Same thing goes for Q-Tips. I only recently learned that that was a brand and not the actual item :P.
I'm a Mountain Dew drinker. What I don't like is when I ask for a Dew in a restaurant, and they offer Sprite or 7up. Those are not even close. Then I'll ask for a Dr. Pepper, and then they usually offer Root Beer, WTF?!
I guess I don't know for sure, but this seems as logical as anything. I always say "pop." :DIt's the same reason people call tissues a "Kleenex".

It's a Southern thing. People up north call it pop, which is weird for Southerners and Texans.
Of course, for people in Texas, Dr. Pepper is the God of Coke/Pop/Soda.
When I was little I used to just say "get me a coke", because that's what we had most of the time. Now, I call it "pop", I grew up in the mid west and everyone there called it that.
because Coke a Cola is so successful that people automatically associate their drink/company with them. This is why coke wins at the polls, but Pepsi wins the blind taste tests and it drives them nuts.
I first came across this phenomenon in college.
Guy from Texas: Give me one of those Cokes.
Me: What are you talking about? I don't have any Cokes.
Guy from Texas: Yeah you do, right there.
Me: This is Sprite.
Guy from Texas: It's a Coke, they're all Cokes.
Me: It's only Coke if it says Coke on the can, weirdo.
I have never heard anyone call a sprite a coke. If I do , I guess I will have to throw some into their eyes.I first came across this phenomenon in college.
