Kids are so overweight these days?

im in year 9 at school, and there is literally only 1-2 overweight people in my year level.

But the year 7's and 8's, is a totally different story. Id say more than half of the kids are overweight.

Im curious as to why this is, and do you think it will get worse and worse as the years go on?

All true, but what i dont get, is that McDonalds and all other fast food places, say they are becoming healthier, and all school canteens around this area have gotten rid of junk foods. So why is food getting healthier, but kids are getting fatter? It doesn't make sence to me.

The only serious explanation I can think of is decreased physical activity.

So when does the parent's responsibility kick in?

I never ate junk food while growing up because my parents didnt allow it.

I think that fat children from lower age groupd just draw your attention to them more and it seems like they are a bigger population than your current age group when in reality they are nearly the same. Maybe the younger overweight kids are hanging around the same area you're hanging around in.

they don't care about what they eat so they end up getting fat. i'm kind of surpriced about that because young people now watch what they eat and things to stay skinny.

They're overweight because they eat too much food & don't do any exercise to burn it off.

Simple.

I have very minimal exercise, eating chocolate every day along with a lot of carbohydrates, yet I'm skinny and actually one of the fittest/athletic people in my year level. It's really weird.. Only thing is that i never have any fast food or fatty dinners/lunches. I praise genetics :)

I think you should add desert to the explanation. It doesn't help if you eat something healthy, then an ice cream as a reward to yourself

Because they have really twisted ideas of diet: They think cheap pizza is healthy cause it hase tomato on it, they think real cheese is good for you because 'unprocessed', they think having their 5 a day means they can eat what ever they like in the meantime, they think crisps and chips are healthy cause they're made from potato. Also they eat too much processed food, too much chocolate and are pretty lazy.... . Personally i can''t see how someone can get to 20 stonne and not know how they get there, i do hardly any physical activity but my BMI is well in the healthy region.

A lot of skinny people that eat like you do and don't get exercise may be skinny, but are just as unhealthy and at risk for diseases associated with poor nutrition as are the overweight.

There aren't actually that many McDonald's adverts on telly anymore. That I've seen anyway, there's certainly no more Happy Meal ones. They're parents will just be barely mid-20s and won't/don't cook at home. So it's takeaway most nights.

Parents don't moderate what they eat, therefore the kids develop bad eating habits and mostly eat junk foods and fast food.

something in the water? At my school there are a good number of overweight kids but i don't think all of them are their own fault. We do have a lot more normal wight kids though, but your most likely to have 1 overweight kid in your class. Although this semester i hardly have any, o well.
