How come the word "diversity" almost always means "racial and ethnic diversity"? Most of the time, when I hear people use this word, they're referring to racial and ethnic diversity. What about diversity in:

  • beliefs?
  • income?
  • educational attainment?
  • fashion?
  • religion?
  • political ideologies?
  • life?

And God knows what else.

The word diversity doesn't refer to racial and ethnic diversity exclusively. Why has the word become that way though? I think it's a little annoying.

Because diversity in these things here are naturally occurring or they occur as a direct result of ethnic or racial diversity. Besides, it's hard to 'enforce' or facilitate diversity via beliefs, income, et al. by themselves.

Things such as beliefs, political ideologies, and religion ARE often times used to define diversity. The other information you suggested such as income would not be obtainable information typically.

I think this is a great post, TC. An acceptance for a diversity of ideas is a thing all countries and cultures should aspire to.

Hmmm, kinda sounds like stereotyping to me....... Don't you just love generalizations? Makes life so much easier not to have to think.

Because "we need more people who wear Stacy Adams in this company" would not be useful.
