How dangerous is a torpedo?

In games you don't see anything like that, Torpedos are more powerful than in games torpedo.

In WWII they had I think 1000 pounds of high explosive in a standard torpedo. Now days we have nuclear torpedos.

A couple of things -

1. Modern torpedoes are much more powerful than WWII torpedoes. They use a more potent explosive.

2. The ship in the real attack is a destroyer, but the ship in the SH IV video looks like a heavy cruiser. Heavy Cruisers would be much larger, and would use far heavier armor.

In reality, games tend to play up torpedo explosions too much. Lots of fireballs, massive, ship-wide explosions, and so forth. But unless you hit an ammunition magazine or a fuel reserve, that just isn't going to happen. Normal torpedo explosions will do nothing more than blow a lot of water into the air. The ship will have a big hole in it under the waterline, but unless it's a small ship, it will likely stay intact, and certainly won't burst into a flames or anything.

I believe torpedoes are meant to detonate under the ship and not actually hit the ship itself. The ensuing explosion forces the ship to flex up and then back down again, essentially snapping it like a twig.

With magnetic pistols, yes, and that's one of the reasons that modern torpedoes are more lethal than WWII torpedoes. For the longest time, neither the Axis nor Allied forces could get their magnetic pistols working correctly and consistently, and so they were resorting to the less sophisticated contact pistols that were designed to blow a hole in the side of the hull.

Still, regardless of the pistol used, the goal of a torpedo is to blow a hole in the target to allow it to fill with water. If the target snaps in half, that's just an added bonus. There is still a low likelihood of producing a catastrophic secondary explosion, unless the torpedo detonates near an ammunition magazine or a fuel storage tank.

I never disagreed with you on that ;) It's all just dramatisation from the media, like how every car will explode if it crashes.

Not necessarily, the knife in video games is WAY overpowered.

I dunno about you but if I hit a wooden fence with a knife in real life is the fence supposed to explosively crumble into nothingness, becuase thats what happens in Bad Company. And COD 4.

you take the time to post those two links yet you failed to see the video of a real torpedo attack in the related videos that shows that yes, they are dangerous.

Torpedoes are extremely dangerous, even if it's a dud, they can explode anytime. You don't want to be with the radius of a torpedo or a hit.

Well yea, I agree with you on that part. If you shoot a guy with a heavy machine gun hes supposed to drop down and stay there, not wait behind cover for his health to regenerate and then run out and use the rocket launcher with those 5 rockets that he was carrying in his interdemensional backpack.

But hey, video games arent supposed to be too realistic, thats why theyre games, right!
