I'm talking about Philippines. I already know the reasons for why my country still rots. It's still considered the sick man of Asia. But i'm wondering how the Americans would answer this question so how did it became like this?

The concept of spelling Phillipines with a P-h and Filipino with an F have always made America weary of helping.

Aren't PR and hawaii both colonies as well?

Well, if you want to get technical; every state was once a colony...
I don't think I'd classify the Philippines as a colony....LJS9502_basicand why is that? colony - 2. A region politically controlled by a distant country; a dependency. "As it became increasingly clear the United States would not recognize the First Philippine Republic, the Philippine-American War broke out. It ended with American control over the islands which were then administered as an insular area." care to elaborate on your statement?
The Americans didn't leave Philippines right after the Spanish-American War and instead flourished with our islands under their control and trade through other Asian nations at the time. Why did the Americans come to the Philippines in the first place? It's such a far Spanish colony that why should the US intervene? Colonization of course especially that our nation was the first European colony in Asia to rebel. British and Dutch would be very alarmed that a new nationalist Asian country would emerge and would fuel unrest in their colonies. In that sense, the Americans just replaced the Spaniards as colonizers. What makes it different?didnt the Americans took over the Philippine from the spanish? my opinion that is not a colony.

Well unlike most of the other states texas was actually its own country for a bit... if I remember vermont and somewhere else was as well.
states and countries are interchangeable, just because our federal government has become the monolithic monster it is today does not mean it was always like that, the united states was created to act just like it sounds, a union of independent states bonding to pool resources in certain instances, such as defence. The Philippines was freed from the tyranny of Spain, then the Philippines wanted to be a free country instead of a colony, so the U.S. said okay.
That is an awfully "creative" way to discuss the American Philippine-American War. You know, where we refused to recognize the Philippine republican and instead became an "insular area" or in less euphemistic terms, a colony. The Philippines was freed from the tyranny of Spain, then the Philippines wanted to be a free country instead of a colony, so the U.S. said okay.

You missed out a war, some concentration camps, and a few other minor details. The Philippines was freed from the tyranny of Spain, then the Philippines wanted to be a free country instead of a colony, so the U.S. said okay.

[QUOTE="Half-Way"]So what countries are Singapore, Taiwan, and South Korea taking advantage of?its simple. All great colonies had countries to take advantage of.
Thats the great way of capitalism, it only works if you have a country to steal resources from

i was hinting at America, but i realised it wasn't too obvious, so i deleted the post. :P

I don't think Philippine is that bad, infact, I'd say it's an awesome country, despite the problems. Development isn't all that matters for a country, and you shouldn't worry as long as you guys are progressing, however slow. Have some Pinoy pride, brother.

I know it's a state, but in terms of history wouldn't it be a colony? I mean PR as far as I know is considered one and could be a state next year for all we know but that didn't change the fact they were one.
Actually, the US lowkey bought the Philippines from the Spaniards, Phillie was under US for several years, then WW2 happened. Japan conquered Phillie, US fought back but lost, they came back and fought off the Japanese. But anways, Philippines ain't that BAAD, its just the stupid president who Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who fckd it up! And corrupt govnt.. Well maybe it is that bad. :(The Philippines was freed from the tyranny of Spain, then the Philippines wanted to be a free country instead of a colony, so the U.S. said okay.
