I think he's the most charismatic of the Republican nominees. He really seemed like a guy who "you can go have a beer with" and he came up with catchy phrases like 999. Then people found out he had issues, the catchy 999 plan sucked, and he didn't know much of anything about foreign affairs.

he allowed himself to become a mirror of the generic republican. I think that combined with having zero decent candidates to compete against got his poll numbers so high. If you look at how many frontrunners have come and gone I think that having no half decent candidates is the only conclusion you can come to.
