When they told you that your grades will affect your life forever and if you dont get good grades you'll never get to go to college.

I had bad grades. I thought I was never gonna go to college in my future. I thought high school was the beginning or ending of all things in your life.

They also talked about how they never lose your grades but I called my high school and they have no record of me even going there. I went there for a semester. I guess thats good because when I get my ged I can say I never went to high school and I did homeschool.

Sounds like someone was trying to scare you into doing better. The stuff you learn in high-school is a joke imo. Most community colleges let you retake all the high-school stuff. So why not go right after middle-school?

One of my teachers tells me that all the time, if anything it makes my effort (which I do apply myself and do get good grades) towards school go down.

I knew it was BS because it is. Almost no employer cares about your grades. The ONLY job I've ever applied to that asked for transcripts was the Sheriff department.

like most people I thought they were serious and correct, and it caused me a lot of anxiety because I was a poor student.

In some ways it is true since high school is a springboard to college which dictates the rest of your life... But I don't think I was ever told that.

I was told that, but not to an extreme. In a way, it does have an impact on your future, but to the degree it does depends on the person and what they decide to do with their life. It could be big for some, and for others it could mean absolutely nothing.

Doesn't that mean that most community colleges are a joke then? Since you claim that they let you take the same classes you took in high school?

Never really cared, my high school grades were only bonus points on my college entrance exam. From 1600 points I got 1319 if I had presented my school grades I would have had a 100 point bonus but I was lazy and didn't take the time to get them. After that day I never had to use them again, never thought they would be useful in any way.

Oops, my bad.:P What I meant to say was that high-school is a joke because you can learn all the same stuff in college, making it somewhat pointless. Not that the subjects themselves are a joke (although some of them are).

Well, you're still saying college is pointless because "you can learn all the same stuff in college." that you learn in high school. So why not do well in high school and just forget about college?

I am in one AP class and one Honors class, and I have taken math a grade level up since 5th grade (like a lot of people at my school). I do so for scholarship money. I could breeze through HS taking grade level classes. I know that it doesn't really matter what your HS grades are after you are done. I just don't want debt.

Good choice and the potential college credit you get from taking AP exams will reduce the classes that you'll need to take in college.

Because nobody cares about high-school education anymore. All employers look for now is that ever so sought after degree, without it you might as well be working at the golden arches, unless you're one of the few that gets lucky, and can find a decent job without one.

That's a big part of it for me. Knowing that I could skip out on certain math and english classes in college was a big reason for me to take advanced classes.

The point of college is to gain a deeper knowledge and understating of things you learned in high school by taking higher level classes. Taking the same classes or learning the same things in college as you did in high school defeats the purpose of college. Sure there are classes that are offered in college that are pretty much the same as high school but those are for people that didn't take those classes in high school. For example, taking calculus in high school helped me a lot when I had to take more calculus classes in college. If I didn't take calculus in high school I would of had to take an extra calculus class in college to learn the basics of calculus.

If you want to go directly to a university you had better have good grades or at least average grades with ridiculous SAT or ACT scores. It does matter. I guess you could just be lazy and hope you do well in Community College, but if you didn't care enough in high school, then it's likely you won't care in junior college, so why even go. Better to just have a so-so job making $12 an hour.

I figured if I could do it with no effort it probably wasn't that big of a deal in the long run.

I'm pissed they told me that all throughout school. Sure I'm only 17 but I can tell you as a fact that I didn't need to know the capitols of all 50 states or 99% of the crap I learned in my schooling.

In high school, I was told that colleges look at your junior year grades and if they have to, they'll look at some of your senior year grades.

You have to be pretty bad to not get into college (65 avg is the passing mark here). If you have respect and listen when the teacher is talking that mark should be cake.

Personally I was always getting good grades, so what said only reinforced what I believed. I know of a university full of people not as intelligent as high school students (3% were from top 10% of HS rank)

slipknot0129

they are only important if you want to get into a top-tier school out of high school.

I have a good friend i met while in college. i was a sophomore in college, he was like 24 and just got his GED because he had dropped out of high school. he then went to community college and was highly motivated to learn about politics. he ended up being one of the valedictorians and is about to start at CAL Berkeley this next semester.

point of the story. high school grades are not the be-all, end-all to your adult education. your college grades on the other hand, will make a difference if you intend to go get your master's or apply to certain jobs.

I had a 3.9 in high school, but i didn't apply myself for "extra curricular" activities and so i limited myself on my college choices. once i got into college, i realized keeping straight A's was almost impossible. most job recruiters i've met have said if you don't have over a 3.7 GPA in college (pretty much all A's and -A's) then don't bother putting it on your resume because they don't see a big difference from a 3.0 to a 3.5.

I was never told any of that; I was told plenty of times that going to College was, in fact, a necessity. But they always said even if you do badly in school, the community colleges can and will support you.
