Hello,this thread is for the people who are from countries that English is not their primary language.

I have learned english from video-games and especially role-playing games.{most of them are conversation based after all}

For example,if I wouldn't know the meaning of a word,I would go to dictionary and find the meaning of that word{it was very hard I must admit}. of course I don't know english completely,but I will learn it completely some day.it's not too late.

This thread intrigues me as I gave a presentation on bilingualism in my psycholinguistics class earlier this evening. Needless to say it was not related to video games but this has now got me thinking about how video games could be used to promote language acquisition.

KOTOR and fallout 1&2. they are awesome for learning english because of their great story.I mean their story makes you follow it.KOTOR story forced me to go to learn english.and since dialogues are very important in these games,You must know english pretty well to enjoy them.

Um, my sisters started learning English before me since they were older and I sometimes opened their books and just read without knowing a thing. I just liked the letters. My pronunciation sucked of course. :P

Then I always used to listen to music with English lyrics and watched American movies and series, and I have always liked the sound of the language.

Then I started lessons when I was 8 years old and got my Proficiency Certificate from the University of Michigan when I was 14. 8)

(Seriously)

But even videogames helped me. Especially Age of Empires and then Red Alert. You know they added words to my vocabulary.

Also these forums help me not forget the language. :)

I first started learning English at school in 3rd grade, where i learned the basis. Then videogames, mostly RPG like TC, is what helped me polishing it a bit more. There's also browsing english forum, msn where 90% of my list is english people, mic chat with said english and part of it is self taught. I often take example of others people post (except when its badly written) to correct my own grammatical errors and improving my writting. I still have improvement to do!

For a French-Canadian i'm not too bad. :P

At school since I was 10. And of course watching English tv shows and movies while reading the dutch subtitles, this way you can make the connections quite easily. I have never understood why movies and tv shows in germany get dubbed in german. Not only is it very irritating to have the image and sound not in sync, the dub also takes away the complete mood of the movie. I can't take a movie seriously if it has been dubbed.

Actually, you have GREAT taste in games. KotOR, and the first two Fallout games are easily among the best RPGs ever, on any platform anywhere. I salute you, fellow RPG fan. :)

I learned some things at school, I also took a course but didnt finish it. So most of the vocabulary came from video games, and also movies. My brother likes to see them in they original audio with subs, so I started to do it too, but I also seeing the dub version.
