Recently there's been a few threads about comedians we either love or hate.  Some of them use racial stereotypes/racial humor  as part of their routines.  I was wondering what are some of your opinions are on this matter.  Personally, it doesn't bother me, it's just what they are: jokes. However, if you're going to point out caricatures of other people, you better be willing to set yourself up as well.  Anyway, what do you guys think?

racism is one-sided - it is pretty much impossible to offend me personally - but I can see how some people could become upset

When it's done right, racism can be hilarious. But then it's no longer racism.

I find nothing wrong with racial humor, i've got so many races in me I can't be offended.  But I do think it gets taken too far some times.

depends on how seriously i think the jokes are meant.  a person who jokes about his own race is probably less likely to mean it genuinly; dually noted however, one who is not of that race is one i would questions more.  either way i don't think that a person who makes a racial joke is necessarily anything other than trying to turn a profit based on laughs (monetarily or otherwise).

You mean white people constantly being made fun of by black people and when the roles are reversed it's "racist."

I think it's dumb when that happens. That's one of the things I like about Louis CK. He can make racial jokes and pretty much says **** you to anyone that thinks he's being racist.

It's a difficult matter because the thin red line between a harmless joke and an insult gets real thin in some places and all together dissapears in other places.

Depends on the way it directed.

Like Ms.Peachez ghetto fried chicken. I'm black and found it to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Heres a link to it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgPUGKL_G6Y

But when you get to start attacking people based on there skin color for humor I won't stand for it, no matter what the race. Mind of Mencia is a good example of how not to do racial humor.

On the subject of making jokes about his daughter: "**** it. What taboo. The kids aren’t there. They’re not in the club. So who gives a ****. And anyway I do enough for my kid. I raise my kid and I keep her from dying. So she can just ****ing kiss my ass. (laughs)"

I generally agree with the consensus in this thread. So long as the humour is not fuelled by real hatred or prejudice I think it's absolutely fine - just like any other "tasteless" or un-PC humour. You've only failed at life when you forget how to laugh at it.

It really depends on how funny it is, or if you are just using race as a edgy subject cause your jokes are weak.

Take carlos mencia:

using the term wetback or beaner - not funny

doing the race olympics, of ice skating, looting, watermelon eating, etc. - very funny

speaking of racial humor - What do you call 50 white people following a black guy?

the PGA tour.

Really? I never would have guessed by the Family Guy Sig. That show is so un-PC at times and that is what makes it the funniest. "Brian: Peter! where did you get that crack?! Peter: From blacks. Brian: What? Peter: Yea a white guy was selling it behind Black's Hardware Store. Priceless....

At first, racial humor was hilarious.  Of course I am talking about comics such as Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock.  But nowadays racial humor is getting extremely old and there aren't many more jokes you can make about the subject.  I think that the death of racial humor played a large part in Dane Cook's rocket to fame.  He came on the scene right when racial humor was out of the picture, and he came with something new for everyone.  I have to make this clear, though, I in no way support Dane Cook, as it has been proven that he steals jokes from other comics, and I just plain don't think he's funny anymore.  Also, too many people like him for the wrong reasons.  Lately, I've noticed that cable television is giving all these extremely crappy comics their own TV shows (Dane Cook, Carlos Mencia, Sarah Silverman)...take it as you will.

Most comedians stereotypes are based on their own ethnicities anyway, especially their extended families who still have their roots set in where they came from them.

It's bull**** to take historical intolerances as a means to justify counter-racism.
