Alright so I'm being shipped off for officer training for the army this summer and a big part of my training is combat water survival techniques... and to be honest I've never been comfortable in the water- probably due to a couple near drowning experiences as a kid... but anywho, I can swim and I do that on occassion - but it seems like despite me going out for a swim I still feel awkward and jittery in the water... any advice on how I can get comfortable so when I get there its not so intimidating?

Is there a local pool near your home? That could do it. Else, take swimming lessons, it's nothing to be ashamed of.

The only way you will get comfortable in water is to spend more time in it, pretty simple actually not really deserving of a thread.

Do it a lot. I was afraid of being on water craft, and still am, but it's gotten better just after a sheer volume of exposure

Attach a large weight to your legs and jump into the deepest water you can find. That way you'll spend the rest of your life in water, and you'll be more than used to it by the end.

Ironically there's a technique called "Flooding" in which you just literally jump in the deep end (two puns in one sentence, I'm on a roll). However, gradual exposure is a more relaxed root, just start off small like in waist-high waters and move down the more comfortable you feel with it.

I reckon your officer just wants to see you guys topless. :P

But seriously, you should just go swimming in your local pool. You could wear some adult armbands if it helps. :P

Take a scuba diving course in the Bahamas, replace the bad water memories with fun water memories.

Smoke while lying on the water (of course, this can only be done through laying on parts where it isn't deep at all. But seriously, go to the pool and learn how to swim like the other guy said.

Everyone has said it tbh. Just spend some more time in and around water. Why don't you try sailing or something like that?

Don't think of it as water... Think of it as a combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen at a 2-1 ratio.

Just head out to a local pool and practice, slowly at first if you are really uncomfortable. If you have enough time to dedicate, take lessons.
