I use AB+ and I have it on for every site, even ones I like. I have 'allow non-intrusive ads' on. Bits of texts are fine, small static images are fine. But when ads went to having flash animations, sound, auto redirections, and started playing before and in the middle of videos was when they went too far.

Some websites are now detecting and blocking users who have an adblocker, luckily there are scripts that block adblockers. They are whining that their worthless lets plays, animation series, and pseudo-intellect articles cant make them a living anymore and that they shouldnt be punished for the third parties giving us annoying ads.

My response: it is a free market, adblockers are legal, and f**k you.

what is there talk about.

companies will keep paying other companies to post ad's, companies will keep trying find ways to get through to people because they can charge more, Adblock will keep taking donations and fight new ad's

IF it truly comes down to it Adblock will go to a subscription mode if they don't get enough donations or stop updating.

Yes ad's have became extremely annoying, in middle of videos, videos playing on the side of websites, sound in background, What they expect? just sit back and watch the garbage that overwhelms the screen

I whitelist sites that produce content I like. Unless you don't like people you like getting paid for content they produce, you should too. Simple as that.

I have adblock, don't need it for this site though since I get no ads. Kinda weird signing out and seeing them on the site though.

I just wanted to know how people on this site feel. Occasionally I'd be in a chatroom or a game and the topic of ad blockers would come up. Everyone will go on about how adblockers are great and then there will be a guy that gives a lecture about the dangers of it; that websites are dieing because of it and everything is going to become subscription based because no one can make money anymore. Website owners claim there is nothing they can do and they have no control whatsoever. Which is bullshit because they can certainly choose who they use and what format, and they chose third-parties that used videos instead of something simple like Google text ads.

maybe they should of consider how fuking annoying some types of ad's are and thought how far can they push until they pissed off the internet world   and drove someone with dedication to make a program for it and keep up with it

I was on NFL.com this past week and they had a banner that told me adblockers diminished teh experience.  I laughed out loud.  Assholes are trying to fight it but I'm not falling for it.

Yup, yup, yup.  My adblocker can't keep up with all the flash videos that load automatically and keep my load times down.  Maybe if your goddamned ads didn't affect my browsing experience I wouldn't midn as much.

redistribution of wealth.  Advertisers can spend all the money they want, there's no way to quantify exactly how much they make from ads, or how much they lose from adblockers.  Losing money on ads is part of the risk of advertising.

I don't use them. I don't go to many different sites, none of them have annoying ads, and I frequently watch videos from Blip users and I want them to be paid for the work they do, I don't mind watching some creepy 30 second US Navy ad for them.

i disable it for sites i wanna support. i used to have it enabled all the time, but then i realized that ads don't annoy me at all; i jus switch to another tab while it's playing. plus, it makes me feel like less of an ass for helping out people who provide content i enjoy

Ads are why most websites are free. If they can't make money off of ads I might have to pay for a subscription. I'm not totally against adblockers but I see little purpose in using one on a website I want to support.

How exactly do you make money off ads?  Do you know exactly how many people you get to buy your product who otherwise would not?  What about television ads, do you vilify anyone who goes to the bathroom or changes the channel during them?  Ads are a gamble, advertisers hedge their bets hoping to increase sales.

I don't mind ads if they are just text and static. What I don't like : 1) ads that play audio/video without my permission 2) adult ads 3) ads that follow you as you scroll up/down the age 4) ads that must be watched fully before you can see a video, go to a link etc. Ads should be static, plain and in the background. My net connection is already a joke (512 kbps connection), so having pages load even slower because of ads is extremely irritating. I love AdBlock Plus. Makes browsing the net a whole lot less annoying.

Well that's an idiotic thing to say. The point is that the ads play, thus the channel gets the advertising money. You can get up and go to the bathroom during a youtube ad and the person still gets the money for it.

Of course I have adblock. And yes, I use it to block each and every advertisement. And I recommend it to everyone I meet, any chance I get. I'm at someone's house, and they put on a youtube video and there's an ad, I'm like, "dude, get fvckin adblock".

If you really want to support your favorite site click on the ads and better yet buy something from the advertiser.  All of this is tracked and a lot of times the site gets paid on a per click basis or if you buy something.  Simply viewing the ad does almost nothing.

There are very few websites that deserve money for what they do, so Adblock is necessary.

pretty much, yeah. I don't like intrusive ads, but for certain sites I really like I will put up with them. The problem I have is when ads get to be so bad that they screw up the site itself.

i block as much as i can, i'll go so far as avoiding ads when watching a video by muting my computer and scrolling the screen down so i can only see the timebar of the video so i know when the ad is over before unmuting and scrolling back up.

A few years ago, ads were displayed rather reasonably. A couple of banners here and that was pretty much it. It was perfectly possible to live with that and even click on a few of them that looked legitimately interesting. Suddenly, the damn things started popping up after every two or three lines of actual content, they were animated, they started talking, screaming, playing videos and all that crap. That's when ad blockers showed up and made tne Interwebs friendly again.

If ads had stayed where they were a few years ago, chances are ad blockers wouldn't even exist. There's a line between advertising and being downright hostile towards viewers, and many websites crossed that line. That's why we have and use ad blockers.

How is that any different from changing the channel?  Either way you're avoiding advertising and either way you can choose to turn it back on and watch it.  It's not like the website ad doesn't "play," it's still on the site itself, it's just being disabled for a particular computer just like TV ads are for a particular TV when the channel is changed.  And either way the advertiser still pays money, either way they still have no quantifiable way of being certain how much their advertising increases sales.

Television advertising is different. Television advertisers pay the channel X amount for the ad (pay more for better time slot), while on the internet advertisers pay X amount for each view the ad gets (and I imagine they pay even more per click of their ad). If you block the ad, it doesn't count as a view and the advertisers don't pay. Websites cost money to run and content costs money to produce. It's people's jobs, and until something better comes along for monetizing the internet (believe me, people have been looking), it's the only business model we've got.

Seriously. I've told every single person I know about it, and practically  demanded  that they get it. And every one of them has. And they all agree, it's the single best thing that ever happened to the internet. I refuse to even use the internet without it anymore. I just started a new job a couple months ago, and I installed adblock on all the computers in the store within my first couple days. Last week, one of the other guys mentioned how he just noticed that he hasn't seen an obnoxious pop up ad in months. I said, "you're welcome".

Agreed. Advertisements suck. Plain and simple. I use adblock on my computer, and for the 2 or 3 TV shows I can bring myself to watch, I don't watch them live, even if I have the time, and nothing else to do. I DVR them, then watch after they're over, so I can fast-forward through the commercials. Shit's mind-numbing. Can't imagine it's good for you.

The ads that annoy me are the seizure inducing kinds, auto sound playing, and ads for videos that are longer than the videos themselves. Watching a 30s ad for a 20s video is just wrong.
