I'm becoming a big fan of Eddie Izzard. For those of you who don't know who he is, he's a transvesitite comedian. Anyway, so you don't get transvesitites and drag queens mixed up, transvestites are perfectly straight men who just so happen to like to wear women's clothing and make up, while drag queens are gay men who dress like women.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with them. I may not understand why they chose to wear women's clothes, but it's their decision and doesn't bother me one bit.

If someone feels they were born the wrong gender, and therefore dresses up like the "opposite", or undergoes a medical procedure, and they makes them feel happy about themselves, then, I'm all for it.

That's a transexual, not a transvesitite. Perhaps you should get in the habit of reading the first post instead of just replying based on a topic title.

The problem is you're not born a gender, society actually believes women are natural make up wearers. There's no logic saying a man wearing lipstick makes him somehow like a woman, except for social reasons, it's generalizing. It's different if he had a vagina...

Well, he probably meant he was born a male, a male sex, thus he was brought in as the male gender. A gender, contrary to what most view it as, is not what sex you are, but the societal part of the sex, like lipstick and panties.

They don't necessarily bother me, but I do think they would benefit from some therapy. Whether or not they're hurting anything, gender confusion would imply that something more serious could be going on.

There are many different usages and meanings of the term transvestism. Some of them contradict each other; the only thing they have in common is

  • They describe a behavior of people dressing in clothes of a gender that is different from the gender they were assigned (usually at birth) or the gender they are living in. It does imply some inner motive for cross-dressing, but does not specify this motive.

The word transvestism therefore should be explained when used; most of the time using cross-dressing will avoid much potential confusion. If encountered, it is necessary to find out which particular meaning it has in the context in which it is presented. In scientific literature, cross-dressing has mostly replaced transvestism.

Therefore, there is a central motive for the desire, like Ed Wood for example, was a womanizer, and therefore "completely straight", but he himself felt more comfortable in woman's clothing, due to feeling some form of improper gender identity.

Your post indicated "straight male", and, I was not contredicting that in any way, you could feel more comfortable in woman's sociological "gender" based clothing, due to gender identity, and still exclusively have sexual attraction to females, just like female transvestites can feel more comfortable in sociological assigned "male" gender roles, and yet be exclusively attracted to males, and therefore "perfectly straight".

If you think about it for a couple seconds, you'll realize I didn't contredict your point, but offered justification to those of us who have no problem with transvestites.

I think some of the efforts made to accomodate transvestites and/or transexuals are a bit ridiculous. Some people may recall that New York was seriously considering allowing male cross dressers to use women's rest rooms about a year ago (not sure if they went through with it). Also, from last week's News of the Weird:

"It's not quite the 2006 News of the Weird story of the kindergarten-bound Broward County, Fla., boy diagnosed with gender identity disorder at age 5, but there will apparently still be steep problems for parents, teachers and students in Highlands Ranch, Colo., when a second-grade boy soon enters third grade as a girl. One student's parent said there'll surely be an issue of, "Why are you in a dress this year when you were in pants last year?" Among the school's problems: building unisex restrooms and preventing bullying. [WUSA-TV (Denver), 2-7-08] "

The roles of men and women are too clearly defined in our society. These people are fully aware of those roles. A dress is completely and totally associated with the female gender. A male wearing a dress is fully aware of that fact. The desire to present oneself as the opposite gender would imply that the person has a large degree of discomfort with him or her self.

If by transvestite, you mean a person who changed sex, then I'd have to say, it's my opinion, that WE SHOULD BURN THEM ALL ON A CROSS!... Lol, no, but seriously, I don't have a problem with transvestites, but I must say, if you want to change sex, you ARE mentally I'll, and it isn't normal, and I DON'T agree with it. But you can't blame a person who has felt like there in the wrong body changing sex. But on the other hand, it's EXTREMELY creepy, and for the most part, you can tell it's a transvestite, so there is no point to it.........
