well after 8 hours of school, 1.5 hours of working out, and 2 hours of music practise, i am tired... i would love to just lay down and sleep or play video games... instead i have to finish a science lab, and an english essay, not to mention the usual math assignment. I am just telling myself that if i get it done i get to rest, knowing i dont have any worries at all...

So what strategies do you use?

That's my flaw: I have no motivation to do most things. I guess the only thing that makes me work is the the consequences I face if I don't.

You're working too hard. You need to take it easy. Our culture over values keeping busy.. unfortunately all you're doing is causing yourself undue stress for very little reason other than living up to false ideals.

I had the same problems during sports too. What I did was just get over it and realize I need my work done.

My good work ethics, as well as the awareness and realization that I would benefit from a given endeavor, seem to work just fine for me.

Just have to sit down and do it and tell yourself, "a crappy grade is better than no grade at all."

"I can't stop until I'm the best or at least feel I'm better than most at it." It's what I have to tell myself anytime I feel like quitting anything. As far as school work, I never had motivation to hit the books if it's a topic I'm simply not interested in, then it becomes just a mind over matter thing.

Its cliche as all hell, I know, but its the only argument you cannot counter.

Just tell yourself "Do it, get it over with, you dont have a choice".

IF you tell yourself "Well, its just another hour of typing" youre gonna come up with an excuse like "Oh, well, I will just wake up early and do it since its only an hour" and when you wake up at 6 am, it ends up taking you 3 more hours, and suddenly youre late or fail to turn it in.

So...just do it.

I have to be the best...period. I will be the best at everything I do; I don't settle for less. -be that school, working out, partying, whatever It meant working 40 hours a week, taking 18 hours in college, partying 3 days a week, working out 5...doesn't matter...sleep is for babies It is a little sick and twisted, but works for me. And it is a somewhat easier to try and accomplish this now that I have graduated (in may)

I am ultimately driven by the same subconscious desire that drives every living and breathing human being: Sleep. I work hard at my job everyday, so that it makes me tired, and I can come home and sleep. I study, read, watch movies, and play Xbox to make my eyes tired, so I can sleep. I participate in sports, exercise everyday....... You get the point. ;)

Interesting you said that. Being angry does boost my performance when I'm playing sports. But when I am doing my assignments I just couldn't think straight and ended up punching my computer screen...

I usually don't have much motivation. My motivation is on and off for playing the guitar. Sometimes I can't stop playing for a week and other times I keep putting it off and play video games instead. What motivates me at that point is the consequence of having my lesson at the end of the week and not knowing any of the material that I was given to work on. The only point that takes motivation for me is picking the guitar up, once I do that I realize how much I enjoy it.

The benefit or reward of doing the work is what pushes me. So if something has a good reward to it, then I will be more motivated to do it, and its just the opposite for something with little or no benefit.

I'm an incredibly unmotivated person, but I do have some tricks to get myself going. For physical stuff, like workouts or biking, I listen to music, that gives me the mind set to do it. For school work I tend to scare myself into doing my work. For example, I'll say to myself "you'll fail if you don't study" (which is usually true :P), that will motivate me.

When it's comes to trying to achieve a goal, I try to think about getting to that goal, closer and closer. As for homework and school, I think of the consequences... and usually that motivates me to doing it

In fact, it's funny that you used the word "push"

Usually I think about the end result and good feeling you get for a job well done. With respect to performing / composition, I get all the motivation I need from frequently being in the spotlight - the reputation I develop there determines whether or not people want to study music with me, and also reflects on my employer. That's more than enough motivation.
