How do you pronounce bagel?

My friend and I got into this discussion tonight and apparently a lot of people in New York say it baggle which is the less common way. Although I've lived in New York my whole life and I say bay-gull. :P

The rest of her friends and I all made fun of her every time she said it until she eventually stopped.

written English is not a very phonetically friendly language, too many influences, colonel for instance being pronounced ker-nal, and hearing Bret Favre being pronounced FARV makes me want to punch someone "fish" can be spelled "ghoti" tough makes f, women makes i, nation makes sh... so it "ghoti" sounds like "fish" then "potato" can be spelled "ghoughpteighbteau", written English needs a phonetic phickslamprey263

Most of those are context dependant, but I get what you're saying. The English language is sort of ridiculous.
