I'm from the UK and I've always wondered how the state of 'Maryland' is actually pronounced.

British people whenever they say it tend to say 'Mary-LAND'

But on US TV and radio I've heard it pronounced as 'Mari-lund'

I hope this makes sense...

Anyway... what's you're take? How do you pronounce it? I'm just curious...

Same as a town in east Tennessee called Maryville. Most call it Mare-uh-ville... unless if you're from there, then it becomes "Myrrvle."

Thanks. I'm glad we've cleared that up. I can correct people with confidence now :) On the rare occasion that they actually say it. :P

I think at one point in our history it was called Mary-land, but that was a long time ago. Now it's Mare-Lund.

It just means that the "y" is a soft sound, not pronounced like "ee".

They have realized the strategic value of the port city of Baltimore, and are planning on taking it back.
