There's two different ways that I've heard this word pronounced. The way I say it makes it sound like "May-Lay". While I've heard others say it so it sounds like "Mee-Lee". But the only time hear it pronounced the second way is on TV. Everyone I've ever known has pronounced it like I do (May-Lay). So maybe its just a geographical thing, and people say it differently in different parts of the country/world. But I just want to know what's the most common pronunciation.

When it's a really good Melee, then I pronounce it 'May-Lay', but when I'm just describing hand-to-hand bludgeoning I say it 'May-Lee'.

See that's my reaction, but I've heard mee-lee used by seemingly legitimate people on the History Channel before, and I remember hearing a news anchor saying it that way as well.

It is, and always will be, May-Lay. Although, some say Mel-Ay, which is also acceptable.

If you ask me, it sounds like the announcer in SSB: M is saying it like "mee lee." Listen to it at the end of this video. So I always thought it was like that. But I looked it up Wikionary it's "mey-lay".
