It's just sometimes hard for me to start conversations with my friends (guys and girls). I am fed up with myself for standing in silence near people. How do you people start conversations? It doesnt come naturally to me...
Alright, with girls look at them in the eye. Don't look at the ground, that is a sign for lack of confidence. To start a conversation I usually just say "Whats up? How is it going?" they usually take it from there.
As in "Sarah, how's it going?" By saying their name first it shows that the person saying that wants to have a connection with you or some crap like that and the how's it going? shows that you have interest in the other person. The same can be accomplished with something like "Julie, looking nice" only less lame
And I too rarely talk (girls like that BTW, it gives you a sense of mysterious-ness that girls really dig)

New friends or current ones? If you see a girl you don't recognize on the streets, try not to. She might have something better on her mind. If on a bus than it should be okay, as she might be bored. Just talk about the weather or you could always ask where she's going.
With girls, I usually start with something simple, I'll ask how they're doing, what they're doing today, ect. Then we go from there. With guys, it's "Hey, what's up?"

Just bring something up, like if you're in the same class, at school, ask them how they did on a test or an assignment. Then let them talk, and build up on that.

People say they fear some kind of social circumstance and then have a hard time coming up with a reason why they fear it. Life's too short to be making up personal excuses for not being social.
Does a conversation with a member of the opposite sex have to lead to some kind of intimate relationship? No. Why would it? It is just a simple conversation about something like what you did last weekend or what your favourite movies are. They are just girls, they won't bite... unless you ask them to.
