I thought light beams travel super far distances (like your flash light) so how does a light saber know when to stop growing?

It's fiction, bro. But if I had to take a crack at it, I'd say that the crystal the light goes through is specially calibrated.

It probably only has enough power to project a certain length. either that or some kind of computer chip thing.

You have to be a Jedi to use it right? The Jedi uses the force to contain the light in one small beam.

Having a longer saber would increase the risk of accidents, and the lightsaber was invented as a weapon of elegance according to Obi-Wan.

it would be too hard to control a light saber of that length. and just think of the power needed to power it...

Lightsabers grow with your talent - hence why those kid Jedi couldnt even get one, samuel L Jackson's one was the biggest in the group, and Darth Maul had a double-freakin-edged one...

you would need a gigantic robotic arm attached to the Death Star and then would need a hell of a lot of power.

The arm would also be too vulnerable to attack.

Han Solo used Luke's lightsaber fine in Empire strikes back when he cut open that animal int he beginning.

I guess George Lucas would say it has something to do with the lens and crystal being calibrated just right. Or he would say "UNLIMITEDDD POWWWWERRRRRRRR!!!!!!"

I'd say that the length of the blade is restricted to the distance at which the light is focused. The light emits far beyone the scope of the blade, but only the blade has enough light focused to be a laser. If that makes any sense :P

i asked a guy with a ph.d. in physics if lightsabers are possible, and he said plainly 'no!'

on the other hand, if you can get a rod so heavy and so dense that light orbits around it, that's your lightsaber right there. of course, you wouldn't be able to pick it up or cut anything with it and you'd probably die if you're anywhere near it...

I recall reading in a book at a local bookstore that showed a picture of a lightsaber. It pointed out all the buttons on the hilt and it pointed to a switch that you could rotate that would adjust the length of the saber. Perhaps that's how it knows where to stop.

When its possible to make death stars, robotic arm will be cheap and easily obtainable. I mean you can get robotic arms now!! you cant buy death stars, not for at least a couple hundred years, by then the dollar store Will probably be selling robotic arms.

It's impossible to tell light when to stop. So yeah whenever I see something relating to Star Wars I always think back to that thought...."How does the light know when to stop?". Funny because I've been thinking the exact thing for a while. Or maybe the lightsaber has some technology that points some extremely stong gravity in a beam that prevents the light from "escaping" past where they wanted the lightsaber to end. Whatever, it's science fiction.

While we're at it...how's it possible to hear the sounds of laser fire and ships exploding in large space battles? There's no air in space, so sound can't travel. This is a glaring issue in both Star Wars and Star Trek.

But I can tell you one thing...those shows wouldn't be nearly as much fun to watch without them.

Yeah, i've been thinking about that too. But IIRC, when the Death Star blows up there's no sound.

Hint:It's science fiction. :o It's possible to make a lightsaber right now BUT you'd need to stop the beam, so a light saber such as the on in the movies would be impossible because the light would have to go on forever, even if it was plasma it would still need to be constrained to a specific area.. an energy beam of that caliber would also scorch the person holding the weapon... and an energy source that small is also impossible these days. hence the "science fiction" aspect of the movie.. there's also the extraterrestials and space travel etc.
But we can make energy beams that destroy stuff. They're just too large for a person to hold. Oh and there are handheld lasers that can set small things on fire. They cost around $300.

The closeest real life explantion i can think of is that is has a band-stop filter and it works at a specific frequecey which the filter stops it once it goes over/under it... but still its just fiction.

Probably some amount of energy in it. Like the battery only allows it to go a certain distance before it'd suck out all the juice.

No one's actually looked it up yet... >_>

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lightsaber

"Other than emitting a colored light, a lightsaber blade was a massless form that neither radiated heat nor expended energy until it came into contact with something (except for air, apparently)."

"High-powered energy was unleashed through a series of positively charged focusing lenses and energizers, manifesting a beam of energy that extended outward from the base to a length of about a meter, then arced circumferentially back to a negatively charged fissure ringing the emitter. A superconductor completed the power loop by feeding the transformed energy back into the internal power cell, where the energy loop began anew."

A grand piece of science-fiction.

There was a show a while back, I believe it was entitled "Star Wars Technology vs Today's" or something or other, and they went through most of the technology to see if it would be possible at some point. The lightsaber was impossible because a laser continues forever unless deflected or scattered by another surface, or something like that. It either scatters or is reflected, and the power to create such a beam is not capable of being put into such a small area (the hilt).
