i was thinking.. why would you make it that short? you could own several rows of bad guys by having like a 100 ft long sabernippon_gamerHaving a longer saber would increase the risk of accidents, and the lightsaber was invented as a weapon of elegance according to Obi-Wan.
You have to be a Jedi to use it right? The Jedi uses the force to contain the light in one small beam.1stCommandoIncorrect. Han Solo used Luke's lightsaber to cut open that tauntaun on Hoth.
[QUOTE="eckboxes02"]A longer light saber might be inpractical for a human, but what if they attached a industrial strength light saber to the death star?Ninja_Dog
how would that be effective?
they could swing it around and kill ships.

when battling other death stars... obviously
Before the new movies, the jedi controled the length of the saber. but in the new movies, general grevious was not a jedi, and yet he could wield them :|

you would need a gigantic robotic arm attached to the Death Star and then would need a hell of a lot of power.
The arm would also be too vulnerable to attack.

Yeah it makes more sense to just leave one open point for the entire thing to be destroyed by a torpedo...

But oh so awesome

Han Solo used Luke's lightsaber fine in Empire strikes back when he cut open that animal int he beginning.
I guess George Lucas would say it has something to do with the lens and crystal being calibrated just right. Or he would say "UNLIMITEDDD POWWWWERRRRRRRR!!!!!!"

Luke cheated. Otherwise it was safe as cake.

In the day of death Star's robotic arms are a dime a dozen.

that didnt make sense to me
star wars doesnt make any sense, why does darth vader wait until luke is like 20 to try to take over the universe?nippon_gamer
You dont know the story, its not like that.
i asked a guy with a ph.d. in physics if lightsabers are possible, and he said plainly 'no!'
on the other hand, if you can get a rod so heavy and so dense that light orbits around it, that's your lightsaber right there. of course, you wouldn't be able to pick it up or cut anything with it and you'd probably die if you're anywhere near it...
I recall reading in a book at a local bookstore that showed a picture of a lightsaber. It pointed out all the buttons on the hilt and it pointed to a switch that you could rotate that would adjust the length of the saber. Perhaps that's how it knows where to stop.

i watched the whole series. anakin turns evil yet only starts to do the really evil stuff years after he turns over to the dark side.

When its possible to make death stars, robotic arm will be cheap and easily obtainable. I mean you can get robotic arms now!! you cant buy death stars, not for at least a couple hundred years, by then the dollar store Will probably be selling robotic arms.
While we're at it...how's it possible to hear the sounds of laser fire and ships exploding in large space battles? There's no air in space, so sound can't travel. This is a glaring issue in both Star Wars and Star Trek.
But I can tell you one thing...those shows wouldn't be nearly as much fun to watch without them.

Yeah, i've been thinking about that too. But IIRC, when the Death Star blows up there's no sound.

In episode 5 Han Solo used Luke's saber to cut open that creature and it was the same length.
There was a show a while back, I believe it was entitled "Star Wars Technology vs Today's" or something or other, and they went through most of the technology to see if it would be possible at some point. The lightsaber was impossible because a laser continues forever unless deflected or scattered by another surface, or something like that. It either scatters or is reflected, and the power to create such a beam is not capable of being put into such a small area (the hilt).
