I am on wikipedia right now doing a project and I would of been mega pissed if I had decided to start this later when the website is blacked out. I also read that Rock Paper Shotgun is blacking out their website. All this does is screw the user over more that SOPA ever would, especially for wikipedia.

I guess it props up the message that " hey, there's more of this to come and it won't be a choice, if this garbage gets passed!" "

I mean assume for a second you didn't know what SOPA is all about. Wikipedia is down, you start looking for answers, you learn they're protesting SOPA, you read about SOPA. They've now spread awareness

They've now just pissed me off.

I think that's kinda the point.

Piss as many people off as possible to educate them on what SOPA could potentially do. Then theoretically the anti-SOPA crowd will get bigger and bigger.

Don't like it... try answers.com. The internet should fight against censorship. We should be united. Not getting pissed that Wikipedia wants to stand up for our rights.

There are things calledbooks and libraries that I heard are pretty helpful. Like some have said, it brings awareness to the subject. Also, it highlights the fact that the gov't can totally shut down wikipedia at will if this law passes. That's a whole lot worse than one day of inconvenience.

Same question of how does not doing your job protest against it? It shows if you are actually an "need" for that company, in this case, if Wikipedia is actually a "need" for people on the internet, and will show what will happen if SOPA/whatever bill passes.

And can the project you're working on not be put into Microsoft Word/Pages, and then be copied over to Wikipedia when it's back?

Which is what I mean. If you require wikipedia to get a passing grade then you're probably missing the whole point of whatever project you've been given (probably about proper research methods if you're a high school student). If however you're in college then you may as well just drop out, your tuition is being wasted.

What exactly is the scope of SOPA? To shutdown wikipedia? Is this bill designed to shut down the net, or is it written in a way that people are afraid may be abused?

If SOPA passed, Wikipedia, and even Google, said that they would shut their websites down to fight against it. SOPA deals with shutting down any website that has ANY copyrighted material in it (idk if it actually shuts that website down, or just shuts it down for the U.S.). This also dealt with, if you put a video of you singing a cover to ANY song, you could go to jail for 5 years, with a hefty bailout as well. Though people explained that if it did pass, you could access the website by putting in the IP address of that website instead of the original URL.

Its designed to fight piracy (poorly designed), but is written in a way that allows abuse.

I dont know if I believe some of that. I find it hard the government would lock you up for singing a cover of a song. I suspect some sites like youtube or others may get warnings if they continue to host copyrighted material, but I doubt the government would just shut them down. I suppose it could be massively abused, but I dont know if they could really enforce it or if people would tolerate that kind of enforcement.

The changes are in the area of who is responsible for copyrighted material on a web page. For instance on youtube it's the user who is faulted if they post copyrighted material. However with SOPA those who want to claim copyrights on videos could just go after youtube it's self. Same goes for every other site. Basically groups like google and wikipedia could be sued over copyrighted material added by users on top of having the site blocked (potentially in countries other than the US but I can't say for sure).

Sony isn't a supporter of SOPA. Somebody posted an article about it stating Sony withdrew it's support a few weeks ago.

Both apple and sony have backed off their support and came out against it after learning more about it. I can't say for the rest of the companies you mentioned, but youve already lost you credibility by saying those two.

I think a lot of companies that "withdrew" support did so not because they thought it was wrong but because they knew supporting it would cost them some customers. Just like the guy who said he wouldn't buy Sony products because they used to support it, they probably feel that protesting it will make them a knight in shining armor to haters of the bill which would equal those protesters buying more of their stuff.

Getting off topic, but I always hated when people pointed out that they're glad they don't live in the U.S. if SOPA passed. I always wanted to say to everyone that the idea of SOPA could easily be adopted by other countries, which term, would then affect them.

Most Americans wouldn't even be able to leave the country, if they were planning on escaping our government, because I believe other countries, including Canada (American's first backup-plan to live somewhere else), were liking the idea of SOPA. And if you wanted to move to one of the more popular countries, you'd have to bring with you some talent that that country NEEDS. Though I'm not too familiar with that topic, so I'm just gunna stop there.

Yah, really lol. Anybody hear anything about Microsoft? Cause I know when this started off, Microsoft and Apple were one of the biggest supporters. And I'd figure, like how "ad1x2" explained with Sony, Microsoft wold stop supporting just in case they lose sales (like that'd hurt them anyway lol).

What are you saying? What they are doing is basically what would happen under SOPA, except less strict and compressed into 12-hours.

Go to wiki. You can put in your zip and they'll give you the contact information for your representatives.

Then contact them. It's fun! :)

On the other hand, you would not believe how many times I'd planned on looking something up on Wikipedia just a half hour after it went down. Nothing important, just idle curiosities. Though yeah, Wikipedia has screenshots and short music clips. Bam, they're now able to be sued. It's to raise attention.

[QUOTE="sonicare"][QUOTE="Ace6301"]If you can't stand a day without wikipedia for your project than chances are you deserve to fail.cybrcatter

Actually if you use wikipedia for your project, you deserve to fail. Lots of inaccurate crap and editorializing on that site.

Indeed.

Inserting humorous disinformation into Wiki articles can be an amusing time-killer while at work.

I use Wikipedia to give me an idea of what to research.

I don't even live in the USA and I'm blocked.... They should have only blocked US IP's or something. Anyway, disabling Javascript works.

You obviously don't understand the actual implications of SOPA and PIPA. Incidentally, Equestria Daily not updating for the day is REALLY bugging me.

LOL Google has a black box over it.sergemyster8
Considering how many people use google each day it's genius. If you click on the black box it gives you a little info about sopa also.

I wish Facebook would do a blackout. That would definitely get the message out there.

To protest SOPA, I'm not gonna use soap today, because soap sounds like SOPA. I'm also not gonna sit on my sofa whilst eating soup.
