How does paper beat rock?

I've always wondered about that. If anything the rock would crush the paper. Does anyone have an alternative to paper in Rock Paper Scissors?

paper could be one of those big blocks of A4 you get in offices. i'd like to see a pair of scissors get through one of them.

although that doesn't sound quite as snappy as 'paper'

Paper can also turn into that matchmaking thing that girls do where you pick one flap and unfold it to see your match, but in this case paper would match rock with a storm drain or a catapault, and win.

And neither of them move, and they would never be attacking eachother because they're inanimate objects and they don't have brains or feelings.
