Today I was watching my highschool football team head out to thier practice. Long story short, I started wondering what the world would be like with no sports, and eventually I was trying to decide how impotant sports are in general. It seems much more money is put in to sports teams and facilities than art or musical programs in many schools, from junior high to college. Besides making a whole lot of money, what is the major importance of sports.

It builds character and teaches kids how to work well as a team, a sense of comradery between the players, its great exercise. There are likely many other things as well that make sports important to many people. BTW I don't play any sports and don't personally enjoy them but I can see importance in it for others.

I'll speak for my fellow Americans and say that we certainly need it to keep in shape. Also, playing sports reduces stress. There's nothing like wasting a Sunday watching the NFL all day. I wouldn't be able to handle life (because I'd be drowning in my own body fat and because it's my getaway from school and work) without sports.

I think sports are very important. It's not just a coincidence that sports have existed for thousands of years.

Being a game can't stop people to feel passion for sports, or anything really..

Other than being a product of needless merchandising, it brings people together, as well tear them apart.

That's kind of like questioning the importance of movies or music and few people would like to see those go.

Well, it's a means for physical activity which of course leads to better physical health. Relieves stress whether you're a part of it or just watching. Also, it can be an excellent social activity. Most of the people that I know from outside my immediate area have been through the sports that I was a part of.

Very important. I played football for much of my life, and it has taught me a lot. Playing with other teammates helps with interaction, and playing in games has helped my leadership skills a lot. My confindence also went up a lot. It also helps a lot with stress because when you play sports, you worry about the sport. Not about what's going wrong in your life at the moment, or something that is bothering you. You just worry about the sports, and you just feel so free.

I absolutely love sports, I can't even imagine a world without them.

I don't want to say I wouldn't be hard worker without sports, but it certainly taught me discipline and to work hard. Plus, it's fun to follow college football, especially with all the shifting in my favorite conference.

Yeah a UNLV fan! I live in Vegas and my brother goes there and I will probably be going there next year.

Cool sig. Glad UNR and Fresno and joining us. I hope we don't lose BYU though. We always have some pretty epic basketball games with them.

Anyway TC, the importance of sports varies from person to person.

What part of Vegas you live in. I live in Pahrump now but I used to live in Henderson off College & Horizon for a very long time.

Henderson (Green Valley to be specific) Yeah I think we have discussed this before. You probably just don't recognize me with my new avi. I'm the guy that used to have the bunny hitting his head as my avi.

Entertainment. There are much more efficient classes we could have to teach teamwork, and they could help everybody, not just the players that made the team.

Sports have a huge impact throughout the world. The Olympics and the FIFA World Cup being great examples of how sports can bring a country together and bring people from all around the world together to celebrate and play sports. Sports are a great way to build character, blow off steam, meet new friends, and are very fun to watch and cheer for.

I think the importance of sports is not the winning and losing, but all the other things you gain in the process, such as work ethic, team work, etiquette, etc... (Source: FORMER college football player, and I put emphasis on the former part because I think being away from sports for a while has really put everything in perspective for me.)

On a personal level, they are important. As for the local professional sports teams (Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, etc, I live in the DFW area), I don't give a rats ***.

Sports are good way of diverting ones attention to other less monotonous things, and before they know it, they got a good workout. Can't be bad!

It should not take precedence over other academic disciplines, but is important, nonetheless for burning off all the excess calories that the typical crappy American diet provides.

Not the most important thing in the world, as most "men" make it sound like. The only good side is getting better physical health. The "becoming a team player" depends upon the person. The down side is the elevation of certain athletes and paying them rediculous amounts of money, for literally, "kicking a ball".

its like saying what if there was no video games. some people wouldn't care. some people would kill themselves. and trying to explain the opposing point of view to the aforementioned parties would not be met with anything other then arguments and misunderstanding.

And by the way, sports are so incredibly important to so many people that without them the world would be an entirely different place.
