I was wondering, in the U.S and canada Its clearly important for people to learn a little due to immigration and in the U.S case they share the border with a large Hispanic country, but how important is it for other countries in the European Union to teach the language their children for example, in their public schools and education system in general? In france for example, They share the border with several countries including Britain, Germany and Spain so that means people in France theoretically should be taught at least the basics of the languages of their neighbor nations?

I've always wondered how wide spread is the language outside Spain and Latin america, Japan Comes to mind as well, I wonder if they teach spanich to children at public schools, most likely not, probably just Chinese and English.

I think Spain is the only country in Europe that actually uses Spanish as an official language.

It's not particularly. Although a knowledge of Spanish definitely helps in understanding French and Italian too.

I would imagine the best scenario is to know a little about all the major languages, that way you can find bus/train depots, hotels and, of course ... the bathroom.

I'd say English is the most important language in Europe, you will find most people in France and Germany are fluent in the language, particularly the young people.

it's not important at all unless you live in Portugal or Spain. German and English are much more useful.

I think Spanish and French are a lot more important than German and Italian.

English is more important than all four of those languages. English is a universal language.

English is the msot important but since you are already fluent with it I would suggest learning French.

Spanish is not that important outside of Spain in Europe.
